How make portrait orientation the default in Mac OS X Lion? it's stuck on landscape.

How do I change the presets for my old HP Laserjet 2200dn and new OfficeJet 6500A Plus to make them default to portrait orientation? Befoere I recently upgraded the Mac to OS X Lion, the default was portrait, which I want. Is this a Lion issue or an HP issue?

Re: How make portrait orientation the default in Mac OS X Lion? it's stuck on landscape.

Hi,

After changing the orientation as portrait, make sure to save the preset and print the page:

Click the Presets drop-down and then Save Current Settings as Preset...

Once you will print by using the preset, the used preset should remain sticky till you will select any other preset.

Hope it helps,

Shlomi

Re: How make portrait orientation the default in Mac OS X Lion? it's stuck on landscape.

Thank you, ShlomiL. That makes sense—I've tried it before—the used preset SHOULD remain sticky—but for me, it does not. The procedure renames the preset to Default Settings-1, and the next time we go to print, Default Settings-1 wants landscape, just as the original Default Settings did.

Is there a next step to fix this?

Hi j-k,

Please clarify which application you are printing from.

And in the meantime, can you see the same happen when using any other application? (e.g. TextEdit, Safari, etc.)

Aha, ShomiL. Good question. Looks as if it's happening in apps running under Safari — Hotmail, websites such as my HMO, etc. I don't see any place in Safari Preferences to manage its printer settings. Do you think I should question Apple about their OS and their browser? Many thanks for your attention.

Addition to my hasty reply: Other apps besides Safari — Word, Excel, TextEdit, etc. — appear to accept the portrait setting just fine, so to me it looks as if Safari is the culprit. That's just my uneducated guess.

Re: How make portrait orientation the default in Mac OS X Lion? it's stuck on landscape.

Hi j-k,

Indeed it seems as Safari issue, or more likely Apple configuration issue.

Let's try the following steps:

  1. First, click Safari and then Quit Safari. <ake sure the app is closed and not highlighted anymore.
  2. Open TextEdit.
  3. Click the File menu.
  4. Click Page Setup.
  5. Click the Portrait orientation button (the left one)
  6. From te Settings drop-down, select Save as Default.
  7. Click OK and Quit TextEdit.

Now open Safari and try printing.

Please let me know if it did the trick,

Shlomi

Re: How make portrait orientation the default in Mac OS X Lion? it's stuck on landscape.

ShlomiL, you did the trick! Thank you SO much for suggesting the TextEdit approach. Even though TextEdit refused to change Page Attributes to Save as Default, when I opened Safari and tried printing, it immediately defaulted to Portrait.

I am delighted and impressed by your perseverance, patience, and skill. You have restored my respect for Hewlett-Packard.

My apologies for today's long silence. I hope didn't think I was not paying attention. Some other issues got in the way of solving the printer problem.

Many, many thanks.
