How to change default Scan Settings (Mac OS 10.6)?

Hi, I have a new Mac (10.6.6) and a new HP OfficeJet 6500. How do I change the default settings for a scan? I open the scanner window via the System Prefs > Print & Fax > Open Scanner. It always reverts to "Pictures" folder, 200 DPI TIFF with "detect separate items" checked. I want to change the default folder, the TIFF to JPEG, and NOT detect separate items, but it doesn't remember my settings, and there is no option to save or change defaults?

I tried also via Image Capture, same thing. I tried deleting the User Prefs > By Host folder, which reset to default, but I still can't save my preferences. PLEASE HP, it works great, but is missing user preferences. After 25 years of the "Personal Computer", don't we have the ability to set personal preferences anymore??

I have the same problem.  My HP 1536dnf MFP defaults back to 300 DPI and Black and White.  I want default to be 200 DPI and Grayscale, but I'm forced to change the settings manually each time I load the program.  It's very annoying.

I upgraded my Mac to Snow Leopard and now my PSC 1210 won't scan.  The message says "Sorry, scanner could not be initialized. (scanner could not be found.)

What do I need to do so that the computer can find the scanner.  There is no problem with printing.

greglindley, Can you provide a little more info? What printer and operating system are you using and what are you trying to accomplish?

I had a similar problem with a different printer. I found that by downloading the driver from HP (http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html) it cleared up my problem. I now look for updates after an OS change.

I have an HP Photosmart C6380. Scan puts paper size at 8 1/2 by 11.69.

Need to chg to 8 1/2 by 11.
