I recently got a new iMac running the most recent update of Lion and my Laserjet p1606dn isn't printing correctly--the text is okay but any images are grainy, dark, and pointalist looking. I have it hooked up via usb.
Before the iMac, it was hooked up to an old powerPC mirror drive door Mac running leopard and I never had a problem.
I have upgraded the firmware on the printer, but that was done before the iMac so I ruled that out as a problem.
What could I be missing?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Erin

Can you check what driver is setup for that printer?
Open System Preferences, Print & Scan, select the printer, select 'Open Print Queue". In the window that opens, select "Printer Setup", then select the "Driver" tab. What does it say in the "Print Using" selection?
Or you might just download the lastest driver package, install, and re-create your print queue:
Hope that helps!

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I am sorry it took my so long to get back to this.
Under Driver in the Printer Setup it says Print Using : Generic PCL Printer
I'm guessing that it my problem right there. I could have sworn that I downloaded and installed the drivers when I took this iMac out of the box. But when I use the pull down menu and try to Select Printer Software... it doesn't locate anything.
I will download the newest driver that you linked to, and create a new printer profile.
Hopefully that will do it.
Thanks for the help.

Okay. I downloaded the newest driver package that is supposed to support 10.7 Lion but when I installed it and subsequently tried to select it in the Add Printer> Print Using pulldown, I get a message saying "
Software for this printer isn't available from Apple. Contact the printer's manufacturer for the latest software."
If I choose Select Printer Software, nothing shows up in the window that pops up. If I choose Other and navigate into the library to choose the hp Laserjet Utility in the printer folder, it does nothing.
I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
I even checked the firmware on the printer and it has been brought up to the most recent version.
Ah, the joys of a new computer!

Hmm, I'll need to do some research. Not sure why the installer from the web isn't working for you. I assume there were no error messages during the installation?

Hi,
We double-checked, and that is the correct software link.
Can you try installing it again? There should be a pretty obvious "Installation Successful" screen at the end. If you get that, try to create your print queue again.
Hope that helps!
