I reinstalled HP 5500 all-in-one software on Mac running OS 10.6 and now I can't print. I've uninstalled the software from the CD and re-installed but no luck.
The printer worked before, but I re-installed software because the document feeder didn't work when scanning documents.
When I try to print nothing happens and when I go into print queue it shows the document and status is listed as "error" with no other details.
I can print a test page. When I try to scan (from the all-in-one) I can see the scan on my screen but can't open the document (pdf) and it says that something is wrong with the scanned document and that some software is missing for the printer.

Download and install this: support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Reset the printing system:
- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

I just installed the HPPrinterDrivers2.8.dmg, which worked and I am able to print again.
Before I reinstalled the HP Printer software, I was able to scan by going to system preferences and selecting the scanner (under list of printers on the left), opening the scanner and selecting file type. This did not work with the document feeder, so I had to scan one page at a time. Otherwise, this approach worked perfectly because the software install by scanning one doc at a time on the glass.
Now I don't see this function in the System Preferences. I tried to using the document feeder and a screen opens and I can see the scanned document, but get the following error message:
Acrobat could not open 'scan_1241885545_1' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
To create an Adobe PDF document, go to the source application. Then print the document to Adobe PDF.
When I try to scan directly from Adobe Professional, I couldn't because I don't know how to get the printer name in the screen where you're instructed to select the scanner device.
I've tried to scan from the HP Scan App, but had trouble there as well.

Did you add your printer using the Default tab (with Bonjour next to the printer name)? If so, the scanner should also be present.
Use Image Capture in your Applications folder. Click on your scanner on the left side, then click "Show Detals" along the bottom. A lot of settings, including scan from doc feeder will be along the right side.

The scanner is not present when I used Image Capture. No devices were listed.
I don't know what you are talking about when you asked if I added the printer using the Default tab (with Bonjour next to the printer name)
Please provide more detail about adding the printer using Default tab (with Bonjour).
Thanks.

- Open System Preferences > Print & Scan.
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer.
- In the resulting window there will be several "tabs" along the top. Select the Defualt tab. Look for the printer, make sure it says Bonjour next to its name.
- Select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
