I upgraded two macs (imac + macbook) to Lion few months ago from Snow Leopard. Ever since my Laserjet 5M no longer prints from these macs.
I downloaded all Apple updates including HP printer update, but all I get is a message "The printer is not responding" when I try to print.
The printer works fine when I use my older iMac with OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger).
The Laserjet in question is network printer connected by Ethernet.
What is wrong?

Let's reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Hi!
I had a similary issue with my HP Laserjet 4050. I did as suggested and still get a printer not responding error.
Please advise.
Thanks.

Thanks.
I did what you recommended. Deleted all printers and Added my LaserJet 5 with many different drivers and protocols, but nothing worked.
I also tried to install Unix drivers, but was not able to run the file.

Are you able to successfully ping the printer's ip address from the Terminal?
1. open the Terminal Application
2. type: ping 111.222.333.444 <replace 111.222.333.444 with the IP address of the printer>
3. check to see if the printer responds

No. I can't get a ping.
PING 192.168.255.10 (192.168.255.10): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
Request timeout for icmp_seq 3
I have one old imac in the same network which I did not upgrade to lion. I can print from there. Network is simple. Just one ADSL modem w/DHCP and 4 computers connected to it via Ethernet.

Do you have any old HP software in your Applications folder? If so, use the uninstaller contained within that folder.
Restart.
Finally, download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

Ok.
So lets try and break down the toplogy of your network.
Are all devices plugged into the ADSL router? Do you have a wireless bridge of any sort? Switch/Hub?
As of right now this particular Mac and the printer are not talking at even a basic level. Mac OS 10.7 made several changes to the networking structure.
Verify that the IP address shown on the Mac is still on the same subnet as the printer.
Can you file share between the two Macs?

Thanks for quick responses.
1. I ran HP Printer Drivers v.2.8 OS X, but situation did not change
2. I checked my network configuration.
All four computers and printer are connected to an ADSL box with hub: 4 by Ethernet and one by Wifi.
- Two Macs with Lion 10.7.2 (one by Ethernet, one by Wifi)
- One Mac with Tiger - Ethernet
- One Win 7 - Ethernet
- LaserJet - Ethernet
These settings are the same in LaserJet and in Macs
Gateway IP: 192.168.100.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
LaserJet had a static IP 192.168.255.10. I changed that so it gets IP from same DHCP as the computers (BOOTP). That worked and now I get response to ping.
PING 192.168.100.44 (192.168.100.44): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.100.44: icmp_seq=0 ttl=60 time=7.147 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.100.44: icmp_seq=1 ttl=60 time=3.516 ms
When printing I get "The printer is not responding." message almost instantly after starting to print.
I tried to share files between Macs. I can file share a file between Lion Macs, but when I try to read a file shared by Lion Mac from a Tiger Mac I get an "connection error" . When sharing on Tiger mac, the shared folders do not show at all in Lion Macs.
As if the Lion upgrade split the network in half.

IronBadger... this is why this issue is so frustrating.... I can ping, telnet and log on to my HP 4050 web management page with no problem.
I am just unable print.
I thought of updating my DirectJet firmware, but I think it just prints the file. I do not recall the upgrade requireing paper, so I abort the firmware upgrade.
Any additional thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
