LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP won't scan using ADF and HP Scan 3 in OS X Lion

I am using an HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP on my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 running OS X Lion 10.7.3 (fully patched). I am connected wirelessly using Bonjour Multifunction. I have disabled the fax functionality. I can print to the device, and scan from the device using the flatbed and HP Scan 3 software. My issue is scanning with the auto document feeder (ADF) using HP Scan 3.

MFP-specific data:

  • Service ID: 21208
  • FW Version: 2011-12-15 (latest)
  • Driver Version: HP PostScript Driver 18.4 (latest)
  • Product Number: CE538A

Updated files from HP:

  • HP_Lion_LJ_SW_v12.13.26.dmg (latest software update)
  • HP_Scan_for_Mac_OS_X_10.7_Update.dmg (latest scanner update)
  • M1530_Series_FW_Update-20111215.dmg (latest firmware update)

Specific issue:

Using HP Scan 3/ADF: Page 1 stops at 33% complete; no error on MFP display, but iMac/HP Scan 3 displays the following scanner error: "The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9931.)"

Resolution attempts (aside from software/firmware updates noted above):

  • HP Scan 3/flatbed: Works correctly
  • HP Scan 3/ADF (using a Windows 7 Asus laptop): Works correctly
  • Image Capture/ADF (OS X Lion): Works correctly
  • Rebooting the iMac does not fix the error.
  • Cycling power (including power cord removal, 30 sec. pause, and re-insertion) on MFP does not fix the error.
  • The error did not occur while using OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

It appears to be specific to HP Scan 3 in OS X Lion using the ADF. While I could resolve myself to using Image Capture (native in OS X) and the ADF, I prefer using HP Scan 3 as it not only allows dpi setting but resultant PDF quality setting, which is great for controlling output file size. Seeing as I'm on a Mac, I also prefer not using HP Scan 3/ADF on the Windows 7 laptop (shudder :-P).

Can anyone help me figure out the HP Scan 3 / ADF issue in OS X Lion?

Re: LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP won't scan using ADF and HP Scan 3 in OS X Lion

[ Edited ]

Today i am facing exactly the same ADF issue. Apart from using nearly the same setup and my MFP is a brand new CM1415fnw, the issue seems to be the HP supplied driver resp. the HPScan v3.7.9 (59).

My MFP data:

Model: HP Laserjet CM1415fnw

FW Version: updated with "CM1410_MFP_Series_FW_Update-20111215"

Driver from HP: HP_Lion_LJ_SW_v12.13.26.dmg

Service-ID: 22036

Product No.: CE862A

Issue:

Exactly the same as the TO

Differences to the TO's setup:

Used Ethernet instead of WLAN

This was the first time i wanted to use the ADF - unfortunately this immediate failure with the HP software under OS X stopped me from using it.

Can HP please help here with an update? Otherwise the ADF functionality is unusable with HPScan 3 on a Mac.

I have same issue with Officejet 4500 Wireless

i thought it was hardware issue with Doc feeder, bought new printer, updated all software/drivers.......same problem.....scan text via document reader is not legible.  Nothing fixes.  Flatbed works.

Hello,

Please try the following steps and let me know of any change:

*Please note it will affect other pritners you may have, so those will need to be reconfigured as well.

  1. From Finder, click the Go Menu

  4. Enter the Printers folder.
  5. Remove the hp folder.

Next, reset the printing system as following:

*Be aware that resetting the printer system will remove any existing print queue and reset any customized driver settings.

Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences .
Select Print & Scan.
Right-click (or Ctrl + click) your product in the Printers list in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system .
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type your user Name and Password .
Click OK . The printing system resets.

Next, repair the disk permissions:

1. Open the the Applications folder.
2. Go to the Utilities folder.
3. Double-click on Disk Utility.
4. Select the hard drive containing the boot volume.
5. Go to the First Aid tab and select Repair Disk Permissions.
Note: This process may take several minutes depending on the Mac and amount of permissions that need to be repaired. The Progress Log will indicate when the proccess has been completed.

Finally, enter Print & Scan,

Click the Plus sign and add the printer.

Approve to the driver from Apple servers and try scanning using the HP Scan 3.

Re: LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP won't scan using ADF and HP Scan 3 in OS X Lion

ShlomiL,

Thank you for your advice. I attempted exactly what you had written, and still received the same error at 66% of page scan. I thought perhaps in addition to your steps I would uninstall and reinstall the software from HP, using the HP_Lion_LJ_SW_v12.13.26.dmg package from HP (this did not include the upgraded HP Scan 3 app).

When attempting to scan a 2-page document, the first page scanned successfully, but page 2 stopped at the same 66% completion point. Then I attempted to install the HP_Scan_for_Mac_OS_X_10.7_Update.dmg package to upgrade HP Scan 3 to the latest version.

This was also unsuccessful, as page 1 stopped at 66% completion.

Unfortunately it appears I am back to square one.

Re: LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP won't scan using ADF and HP Scan 3 in OS X Lion

Hi Shlomi,

i've tried your suggested solution and finally it worked! The ADF is usable now.

Interested in understanding what could be the cause i've noticed when repairing disk permissions that the folders Library/Printers and Library/ImageCapture were set back from 0 to 80 regarding group permissions.

Thank you very much!

Re: LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP won't scan using ADF and HP Scan 3 in OS X Lion

Greetings Shlomi,

Alas, after spending nearly two hours following your very detailed steps, I am still encountering the same page jam and error message.

In addition to the steps below, I also attempted a third Repair Disk Permissions execution after the HP software suite was installed (no effect), I tried upgrading to the OS X Lion version of HP Scan 3 (no effect), rebooting the printer (no effect), and creating a new Administrator User account (no effect).

I have a feeling there is something specific to my installation of OS X Lion 10.7.3 and this very specific printer model (feeling jealous of MaHora right about now). I think I will resolve to using HP Scan 3 on the flatbed for single page scans, and Apple's Image Capture for multi-page scans, and live with the inability to manage output PDF file size/density.

Thank you for all you've done to try to help me, I really do appreciate it. I'll give you Kudos for that, even though it didn't solve my issue.
