Running Mac OS X 10.7.2, on my iMac & MacBooks.
I can print fine on all computers but when I want to try and scan an image in the scanner and have it show up on my computer, I go to HP Director, and no 'Scanner' is visible or selectable. Even when I open up HP Scan nothing shows up. I just installed the latest firmware for the printer (M1217nfw) which is 2011-09-20 , Version:20110826 and still nothing is working. Any ideas?

HP director does not work with Lion 10.7.
If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard or Lion and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

To clarify, the HP Director do work with Lion 10.7 for several devices.
Make sure you installed the latest HP Software version 5.0 as previous versions are not compatible with Lion.
I would suggest you to follow PrintDoc's steps above, then reinstall the compatible software below:
Once done, install any available HP update by clicking the Apple icon, then Software Update.
Then check for any change.

I've done everything suggest - downloaded new software, reconfigured, got wireless print up and running again
But now there's another problem - the HP director sees the printer now and appears to be active. But when I click to launch scan or fax, nothing happen. They don't launch.
Please advise. This is stupidly difficult and frustrating

Well, it sure is wonderful to ask a legitimate question about a printer that won't work on the "HP Support Forum" and not hear a word from anybody at HP. So the printer's being returned, and my next printer purchase will not be an HP.
