Mac os x 10.4.11 and Laserjet 5 printer driver downloads.

How do I connect my mac os x with my Laserjet 5 printer? How do I get the driver download to connect the two so that I can print?

Thanks,

Re: Mac os x 10.4.11 and Laserjet 5 printer driver downloads.

I have a new mac running 10.5.6, and I have a Laserjet 5P printer, connected to the computer with a parallel --> USB Centronics cable. The printer works fine when i am running XP in boot camp. When i try to print out of the Mac side, though -- like, send a document with one line -- it prints like 20 pp, most of them blank, the rest gibberish. The Mac "sees" the printer and ID's it as a laserjet 5P. i have downloaded and installed the driver and software on the following page:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=14999&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25479&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=219
. . .and I have also updated the software on the Mac. No help.

Now what?

Re: Mac os x 10.4.11 and Laserjet 5 printer driver downloads.

Hello purefog

There were two Laserjet 5 printers, LJ 5p and LJ 5mp.  The LJ 5mp is a postscript printer and 100% supported with Mac OS X from HP.   The LJ 5p was windows only, no Mac driver from HP.   You might be OK with a Gutenprint driver for the LJ5p from the link below.

http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php#5.2.4

Gutenprint makes no difference. The only constructive thought I have heard is to install the C3152A chip thereby deluding the Mac into thinking it's a 5mp. Does that sound plausible?

Um -- that link you gave me to download a gutenprint driver is not all that user-friendly. Which driver were you suggesting?

Re: Mac os x 10.4.11 and Laserjet 5 printer driver downloads.

okay, so I downloaded and installed a Gutenprint driver (the most recent). No change. I still get about 25 pages off a one-line TextEdit document, most blank, some with gobbledygook. So, I reiterate my question regarding the C3152A chip.

Re: Mac os x 10.4.11 and Laserjet 5 printer driver downloads.

Hello PureFog

That c3152a chip is actually a postscript simm that would turn the 5p into a 5mp.    I checked HP and the part # is no longer available for that 10 yr old printer.  Even it was, I'm thinking that PS simm would be almost as much as a new printer.

I'm not sure why the GutenPrint driver won't work for you, I've seen customer responses where it does.   Maybe its your connection.  A parallel to USB cable is hard to configure on new Macs, is that what you're trying ?

Re: Mac os x 10.4.11 and Laserjet 5 printer driver downloads.

If you can get your hands on the PS SIMM for the 5P that will be the best solution.  The gutenprint drivers should work.  Did you delete the print queue and re-add it using the driver labeled something like  "HP LaserJet 5 - Gutenprint v5.2.3" after installing the software?  You will probably have to choose Select Printer Driver... in the Print using dialog box.  I don't think it will auto discover the Gutenprint driver.
