No "Scan" or "Email" Option in Director

Hi,

 

I'm using Mac OSX 10.5.6 and the options to Scan and Email in Director are greyed out and thus unselectable (always have been). But I finally need to do some scanning and get this problem solved.I've tried reinstalling the HP software, what next?
