Okay, so I made the mistake of upgrading to Snow Leopard...the 7410 will not scan...all I get is the error message saying "sorry, unknown error"...
Yes, I've uploaded all the new drivers, software updates....Apple doesn't have an answer and it doesn't seem HP cares....

I'm not sure why you would draw the conclusion that Apple or HP doesn't care. Of course we care. It's not in Apple or HP's best interest to upset our customers. That being said, there are some technical reasons the HP software that was shipped before Snow Leopard will not work on Snow Leopard. HP is working as quickly as possible to finish testing and publishing updates for that software. In the meantime, the in-OS support for your device *should* work for print and scan. If it's not, then I can try to help you, but I would need more information.
Here are a couple things to note. The HP Scan software that shipped with your device won't work. I don't know if the error you're describing above is from the HP software or not. But either way, you will need to scan using the OS's built in scanning capability.
Start by going to System Preferences, Click on Print & Fax. Select your device in the list of printers on the left. If you don't see the device, try adding it. With the device added and selected, you should see two tabs on the right side of the screen. A Print and a Scan tab. If you don't see a Scan tab try removing and re-adding the printer on the left side. It might take a moment for the Scan tab to appear. If you do see the Scan tab, click it and select the Open Scanner... button. That should get you into the Scanner application. If things don't work up to this point, let me know.
It will be useful to know how you're connecting to the printer (USB, Network, etc) as well as the steps you used to try to scan.

Hi Trevor,
I did not write the first message, but am also having problems related to updating to Snow Leopard.
My specific problem is that I no longer have control over printing to upper and lower paper cartridges. The printer driver offers the choice, but no matter which one is selected, the driver seems to direct the printer to use the upper cartridge.
Any sugestions would be appreciated!

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and while the HP drivers may not be ready yet you can use the OS X 10.6 scanner support just fine.
System Preferences -> Printer & Fax
At the top of the window switch from Printer to Scanner.
You can now do normal scanner things and while the support is not completely HP 7410 specific it certain will scan to tiff or PDF which is what I needed.
Cheers.

I don't get the scan tab, and there seems to be a problem communicating with the printer (Photosmart c6180). If I select More Printers... it fails to find my printer. Manually entering the IP address doesn't help. I can get to the printer via its IP address (http connection brings up the printer config pages) so the address is valid and its webserver is working.
Any ideas?

Well, OK, so of course first you have to add the printer.
Again, System Prferences -> Print & Fax
Click on '+' button under the list of know printers to add a new printer.
In the Add Printer dialog I have to set protocol to Default.
Then the dialog "finds" the 7410 (as "Officejet 7400 series") and the kind is " Bonjour". I click on "Add" and am returned to the Print & Fax preferences.
Now I select my newly added printer and "Print or Scan" radio button selector appears above the printer name "Officejet 7400 series".
Said radio button defaults to "Print", if I switch it to "Scan" and press on "Open Scanner" it spend some time "opening scanner", find it and then presents a typical scanning control and preview panel. You can contrl the dots-per-inch, etc. here. ...

OK well when I add the printer using say IPP or JetDirect or LPD I just get a printer too.
Only when I have the communications in the "Add Printer" subpage (after pressing "+" in System Preferences >> Print & Fax) set to "Default" at the top of the page do I get a Bonjour protocol printer. I think when Bonjour is used, there is some device capability discovery that occurs and the printer subsystem sees a TWAIN-capable scanner is present. When it starts doing discovery I get:
Printer Name Kind
--------------------------------------------------
Officejet 7400 series (2A56BD) Bonjour
Officejet 7400 series 192.168.0.10] (Fax) HP-Fax
After selecting the Bonjour entry and return to the Print & Fax page and highlight/select the Bonjour entry I have a Print and Scan button pair at the top of the preferences (defaults to Printer).
I do have the printer configured for unencrypted wireless and my MacBook is on the same network segment (192.168.0.0/24) so if Bonjour is a broadcast-based discovery protocol it would work on my network but perhaps not one where there were multiple subnets.
Sorry that's all I've got. I'm not sure if the 7410 is new enough for new driver software to be forthcoming from HP but I hope so.

OK
So followed Trever's instructions - which are clear and good
I find two printers - my bonjour printer and my usb printer as i happen to have the usb plugged in as well
USB Printer: TABS not present
Bonjour Printer: TABS present. Upon clicking Scan it goes through its initiation but ultimately gives me the following error message
"Failed to open a session on the device"
(Backstory: I have Mac Os 10.6.1 and have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest 7410 drivers)
Any ideas what to do next to get a scan?
Thanks in advance
