I uninstalled as you said. Then while getting setup I am running into a problem. The HP Installer is able to get through Introduction, Setup Guide, Installation Type (I chose USB and have it hooked up with a USB cable, I even tried a second one in case the one I was using was defective), It got through Install, but it unable to get to the Setup point.
After finishing the Install step, it says "The software was successfully installed...... please connect it now and make sure it is turned on". I click "Continue" and no devices show up under the list. I click "My device is not listed", then click Continue. Officejet 4500 G510-m appears as a choice now. I highlight it and click Continue. I select "USB" for how my device is connected and click Continue. After a few seconds, a popup comes that says "If your device is not listed, it is not supported by this installer.. Please visit www.hp.com/support....... etc".
I am unable to get beyond this point now. But under system prefs and Printer & Fax, I am able to click the + sign and 4 different printer options show. They are HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z with "Kind" listed as USB", Officejet 4500 G510n-z [109377] "Kind" Bonjour, Officejet 4500 G510n-z [192.168.1.7] (Fax) "Kind" HP-Fax (CUPS), and Officejet 4500 G510n-z [CN15JJ455Y05HR] (Fax) "Kind" HP-Fax (CUPS)... Not sure if this information helps, but thought it might.

Go ahead and add the printer manually in Printer & Fax. Use the Default tab in the resulting window and choose the Bonjour instance of the printer.
Now try to print and scan. I could be that the installer just hung up but the software is indeed installed.
If it does not work, I have lots more ideas!

Ok, i added using Bonjour, and it is doing the same thing. Allows me to change the paper type and color to black catridge only, but then it seems to reverts back and still prints using the color cartridge.

I am stumped on this one. Try to print with the color cartridge removed from the printer. Some of the older printers allowed this, not sure about yours.

That doesn't work. I get the error
"Borderless Printing Error. Borderless printing cannot occur with only the Black Print Cartridge installed. To print a Borderless Photo, install either a tri-color print cartridge, or a photo print cartridge."
It seems like the issue is paper type. It won't allow anything other than "HP Premium Plus Photo". Is there a way I can delete paper type options? I just want to default to Plain Paper or something like that.I think then it would use the black ink cartridge.
By the way, when I use copy mode in black and white, it works just fine. Just a problem when I print from my computer. Hopefully that helps you.

OK, there is some HP file in your Mac that is corrupt or locked that is only allowing Photo paper. Photo paper ONLY accepts ink from the color cartridge.
Let's do the scrubber uninstall again as described above, then look in both: Macintosh HD/Library for any HP folders and delete them, then in [your user folder]/Library for the same and delete them.
Next, download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
Finally, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.

I did exactly as you described above. There were no HP folders under either Library directory. I also did a search on the mac for all folders with "HP" in the name and no other folders came up.
I did the scrubber uninstall, tried looking for any other HP folders, installed the Mac OS update, downloaded and installed new software for G510n printer, and am having the exact same problem. The paper type just stays on "HP Premium Plus Photo"

An interesting thing just happened that may help.
I just receieved a couple attachments (an excel spreadsheet and a word document) via email. I downloaded them from gmail, opened them in word and excel and went to print them. I noticed that my default paper type was selected as "plain paper"!! I went to print them, they printed quickly and in black and white (as the documents were black and white only).
BUT when i try to print my own documents I made via excel and word, or if I try to print something from my web browser (mozilla firefox), it forces the HP Photopaper option.
Hopefully this helps.

I figured it out. Under the "Paper Handling" option, there are various paper types you can choose from. Apparently if you have "borderless paper" (it was defaulted as the "suggested paper type" for some reason), then it will only use HP Premium Photo paper. I changed this to standard "US Letter".. then I can change the paper type to "Plain Paper". It works fine after this.
