My officejet 6210 worked fine on Mac OS 10.5. Now that I have snow leopard, when I try to select my printer in the system preferences, it says some software is missing, and the utility program won't open. When I try, I can't print from MS Word and get the error "Unable to start filter "/Library/Printers/hp/cups/filters/commandtohp.filter/Contents/MacOS/commandtohp" - Operation not permitted. Stopping job because the scheduler could not execute a filter."

I installed new software/drivers from the web for Mac OS 10.6, even though the software/drivers are supposed to come with snow leopard. I've tried every version of deleting and adding the printer, restarting the mac and printer, etc.

Help! Any ideas besides giving up and going back to the older operating system or buying a new printer?

You still had the hp software for 10.5 on your Mac.  Either uninstalling it or installing the new software will NOT uninstall the 10.5 software correctly.

Try this:

Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish

Restart your Mac

Now, run a Software Update.

Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.

If that does not work, install the wrong software from the CD (the one for 10.5 and earlier) then run the special uninstall routine above.

After you get it working I would recommend against installing HP software for your printer.  Scan using the Image Capture app in your Applications folder.

I have the same problem except I can no longer "see" the 6210 when I press the + in Sys Pref/Print & Fax. I have gone thru all the above steps on two Snow Leopard computers, one recently upgraded from Leopard where 6210 was working fine.

Is there anything else I can try? I've also tried swapping usb cables too

If you uninstalled the old hp software with the 'scrubber' option, then you uninstalled correctly.  If you simply used the uninstaller as is or drug it to the trash, you will need to re-do it.

If you uninstalled with the 'scrubber' option, then the next step would be to reset the printing system:

- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
