Officejet Pro 8500A - will not scan

I cannot get the above printer to scan documents - every time I select 'Scan' I get the message "Failed to open a session on the device"

I have installed the latest drivers today and re-installed the printer to no avail. The printer works perfectly over my wireless network.

I have also tried 'Reset the printing system' - no change

Details:

Mac OSX 10.7.2

Officejet 8500A910 (8072F3), Serial NO. CN171CR2R4

Driver: HP inkjet 3  3.2.0

HP scan 3.7.9(59)

Any ideas?

Re: Officejet Pro 8500A - will not scan

Hi again,

I apologize for the delay :smileyhappy:

When you added the printer, did you seen the printer immediately as Bonjour kind or did you added it by IP (HP Jetdirect Socket)?

If you are not sure, enter System Preferences > Print & Scan.
Can you see the printer listed immediately?

Bonjour operate by using IP / DNS Multicasting.

By reviewing your router user guide, i could not locate any information that the router support Multicasting.

In order to ensure, please try temporary setting an Ad Hoc connection (a direct connection between your Mac and the printer, it will clearly clarify if the issue might be caused by the router:

Step one: Restore the network defaults on the All-in-One
  1. Make sure that your HP product is connected to a network with Internet access.
  2. Touch the Right Arrow, and then touch Setup .
  3. Touch Network .
  4. Touch the Down Arrow, and then touch Restore Network Defaults .
  5. When asked 'Are you sure? ' touch Yes .
  6. After the network defaults restore, touch the Up Arrow, and then touch Wireless .
  7. Touch Wireless Radio , and then touch On .
The message 'Wireless Radio is now on ' should briefly display on the control panel and the Wireless light () on the HP product should start to blink. The HP product is now openly broadcasting the ad hoc wireless network.

Step two: connect to the pritner from your Mac:

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon on the top menu, then click Join Other Network.
  2. Click the Show Network button.
  3. Select the network name that starts with HPA910, then click Join.
Allow 3 minutes to fully establish the ad hoc connection.

Step three: Remove any existing print queue of the 8500A:

  1. Enter System Preferences > Print & Scan.
  2. Select the listed 8500A, then click the Minus sign.

Step four: Reconfigure the device by running the HP Setup Assistant, located under Applcations > Hewlett-Packard > Device Utilities

Now try scanning and check for any change.

If the scan succeed through the configured direct connection, it means the scan issue being caused by the router, i would recomment you to contact the router service provider and check if Multicasting supported by the router and what steps needed to enable the protocol.

If the scan fails through the direct connection as well, please let me know.

Regards,

Shlomi

Re: Officejet Pro 8500A - will not scan

Dear Shlomi

Thank you for your ideas, but I think I might give up on wireless. After many hours of frustration I decided to connect the printer to the router by ethernet cable. Everything works perfectly.

I have tried your Step One & Step Two suggestions with the following results:

After restoring Network Defaults, I got the printer to recognise my wifi network, but I never got a flashing Wireless light - only a steady one.

On Step Two, Show network showed my own wireless network but no sign of HPA910.

After this procedure, the printer refused to work at all. I then fitted an ethernet cable, removed the printer and then re-added it - all works perfectly.

I have heard that wireless printing can be a nightmare - they are not wrong!!

Thanks for all your help one again

Re: Officejet Pro 8500A - will not scan

I have iMAC OS 10.7.2. My computer used to scan correctly. Recently I have been getting an error message (Failed to open a session on the device.) I have th HP Officejet PRO 8500A and it is connected to the computer via an ethernet cable (wireless did not work out so well on set-up, likely because of security - I am at a university). Is there an update that will fix this problem? Again, the scanner was working properly and this OS has always been lion.

Re: Officejet Pro 8500A - will not scan

It sounds as though you have exactly the same problem as I encountered with the same setup (Lion + 8500A).

I never did find out what the exact problem was but after un-installing / re-installing the printer several times and using ethernet cable rather than wireless I got it to print & scan.

I think HP know there is a problem but do not seem able to fix it.

Wireless out of the box! - as we say in England, "they are 'avin a larf"!

hp deskjet 1300 series will not scan

I tried to scan a document and it says " failed to open a session on the device"

It does not have any internet connection, but it's an all in one printer.

The copy and print works well, but not the scanner.

thanks.
