Photosmart C3180 All-in-One and iMac Running OS X Lion Not Communicating

I have a C3180 Photosmart printer connected via USB cable to my new iMac running Lion Version 10.7.5.

When I try to print, the first line and a half will print and then I get the “computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer” message.   When I try to scan, I get the message “Scanner not available”.

I have tried three different cables, rebooting the computer, rebooting the printer, reinstalling the printer drivers, reinstalling the printer and running Repair Disk Permissions (in various combinations). The printer photocopies just fine on its own and when I had it attached to my old computer (running Windows) it also worked fine.  I borrowed a friend’s laptop (running Windows) and again everything worked.

What else can I try?

Re: Photosmart C3180 All-in-One and iMac Running OS X Lion Not Communicating

First, make sure the printer is plugged directly into your Mac, not into a USB hub.

Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

Restart your Mac.

Reset the printing system:

- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and then next to the "Use" pulldown, select the printer model (not AirPrint). Wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Thank-you for your quick reply.  I did as you suggested but there is no change.

The printer is directly connected to the computer via the USB ports on the back of the iMac.  There are four ports and I have tried them all.

Thanks for that.  Let's try a different approach.

Do you know for a fact that the HP software you have in your Applications folder is meant for 10.7, Lion?  If not we will have to uninstall it using its own uninstaller (if it will run in Lion).

Re: Photosmart C3180 All-in-One and iMac Running OS X Lion Not Communicating

I am looking in the Applications folder and I cannot see anything that is specifically for either HP or printers. Except for the software you had me install yesterday (see above), I installed everything for the printer via Software Update. When I use the System Information Utility, it says that the Driver Version and the PPD File Version are both 4.0.0.

OK, good.  I was concerned that you had HP software for pre-10.7 installed and that was messing things up.

It is definately something in your Mac.  You reset the printing sytem as instructed, right?

Let's reset the Mac's SMC (System Management Controller) to reset the USB bus (as part of the process):

I have reset the printing system many times.  This time, I Shut Down the system, reset the printing system and then tried printing.  No luck.  Then I reset the SMC, reset the printing system and then tried printing.  Again, no luck.  Same problem.

Re: Photosmart C3180 All-in-One and iMac Running OS X Lion Not Communicating

There is something very funny going on here.

Let's install the 10.7.5 Combo update - this ensures that all updates since 10.7.0 are complete and not corrupt in any way.
