Photosmart C4795 "Device Not Reachable" When Configuring Wireless

Yesterday I bought an HP Photosmart C4795 printer. I connected it via USB and ran the HP Installer. When it comes time for wireless configuration, I select my wireless network, enter the key, and everything looks fine. Then I get "Device Not Reachable -- The network configuration was sucessfully downloaded to the device. However to continue configuring the device in network, your Mac must have access to the device. So please make sure your Mac has access to the Network: 'mynetworknamehere' and retry."

My Mac *does* indeed have access to that network, and I can even pull up the printer's built-in web page in Safari. But Bonjour can't find the printer in the Print & Fax -> Add a printer screen. I've tried this on an iMac running 10.5.8, and on a new MacBook Pro running 10.6.1.

To make matters worse, I wasted fifteen minutes with HP chat support just to find out they don't offer support via chat to Mac users. So they gave me a number to call: (800) 474-6836. I called it. Five times. Was cut off each and every time at "...or you may hold for an agent...".

I'm so disgusted with HP right now. What happened to that once proud company that made great products and stood behind them?

Re: Photosmart C4795 "Device Not Reachable" When Configuring Wireless

Let's try this:

- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click the print queue area and select Reset Printing System
- Select the plus sign and re-add your printer

Sorry about the HP chat and phone support.  You can always come here for help!

Re: Photosmart C4795 "Device Not Reachable" When Configuring Wireless

PrintDoc, thank you for your reply. After spending two hours on the phone with an HP Technical Support agent, we've come to the conclusion that the issue is caused by the Qwest Actiontec PK5000 DSL modem/router/WAP. There are other threads on the support forums describing this same issue (with other HP wireless printer models). Apparently the Actiontec doesn't route packets used by Bonjour. It's frustrating not to be able to use my new printer wirelessly, but it doesn't appear to be HP's fault.

Yeah, I am getting the impression that rental routers are giant pain.  An alternative is to go buy a $40 Linksys router and install it "on top of" the Actiontec, turn off the Actiontec wireless radio and you will have something you can control and will work.

Re: Photosmart C4795 "Device Not Reachable" When Configuring Wireless

I also just purchased the Photosmart C4795 printer. I am able to print and copy just fine, but when I try to scan the scanner doe snot show up in my devices list. I am using a Mac 10.6 and I agree it is completely frustrating that HP does not support Macs. I was also hung up on when I tried to call customer service. I purchased this printer in a panic because I need to scan some documents before the end of this weekend. Someone please help!!!

Try to scan using Preview or Image Capture.

Re: Photosmart C4795 "Device Not Reachable" When Configuring Wireless

I'm having an issue with this printer as well. My problem sounded similar to this one so I'm posting here. I also tried the solution listed above, didn't work.

I have installed this printer, updated the driver. When it gets to the wireless set up the HP software finds my network just fine. When I click to connect I get an error saying "Device not connected" with all the blah blah blah after it. It is connected via USB. Now I have installed and uninstalled this stuff 6 times. Connected and reconnected the power and USB more times than I can count. HP doesn't support any current browsers for live chat support so forget that. I'm not about to install and old browser just so I can talk to a person on live chat.

I noticed that when this printer is being accessed by the HP software it freezes. In other words, you can't push and selections on the touch screen. You can't even turn it off via the power button. So I have unplugged and replugged the power in many times to get this software to see that the printer really is connected.

I'm starting to think I got a lemon printer here. Any more suggestions?

Re: Photosmart C4795 "Device Not Reachable" When Configuring Wireless

Are you using OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?  If so, are you sure you are loading the correct software?  Do not load the software from the printer's CD if you are using 10.6.

If this is the case, let's get rid of it in this special manner:

Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish

Now, run a Software Update.

Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.

You do not need the software now since Snow Leopard has both print & scan drivers built-in. Scan from Preview or Image Capture apps. Scanning from the front panel of the printer does not yet work.

reddylan,

Does your printer freeze with the HP logo on the control panel?
