Are you implying that printer should not be connected during uninstall and install and all the rest except Software Update? Printer lights flash without connection to computer. When printer is plugged in, its on, w/lights, rather than off. It seems that uninstall and some of your other advice might affect printer in a good way.

Leave the printer connected through the whole process. Apple System Update needs to recognize the device in order to grab and updates from the internet.

No Reset. Scanner still fails w/alert about another device controlling printer. Step 1.5: install printer.

Since printer erratic when not linked to computer, maybe its hardware broken. What repairs can I attempt myself since paying for repair is foolish re new printer cost?

while the printer is not connected to the computer, try a power reset:
With the printer on, remove the power cord from the back of the printer. Wait at least 30 seconds, then connect the power card back to the printer. Turn on the printer.

This is one of two similar, failed experiments I did earlier following HP standardized help. Printer so erratic that when power cord reconnected, printer turns on.

So does the error still occur? If so then it is probably a hardware issue, unfortunately.

Is there any kind of crude repair I could attempt, given that the printer is useless otherwise? Is replacing the processor practical, possible and inexpensive? Or maybe hitting it with a hammer?
