First off, I love the printer when it is awake - prints great from all of my Mac products wirelessly from anywhere in the house. Here's the problem and it's happened a couple of times: the printer goes into some deep sleep mode and I am unable to wake it by using the printer touchscreen. In fact, I cannot even power it down by pushing the power button. It obviously doesn't print then either. The only way to get it back on the network is to pull the plug then plug it back in. After that all is fine until the next time it hibernates.

First, please clarify if the printer connected via USB, ethernet or Wirelessly.
For wireless connection, how far the printer located from your router?
Does it have the latest firmware installed?
Also ensure it is directly connected to the power and not throught any power hubs, strips or surge protector, then check for any difference.

The printer is connected wirelessly and the router isabout two feet from the printer. The printer is plugged directly into the wall, and after checking for updates as you suggested, the most current software was already installed...

This thing still won't wake up from hibernation after all the suggestions. Shouldn't have to pull the plug to reset the printer...
So HP dudes, what do I do next? I've complied with your suggestions to date...

I have the same problem and have tried everything; reinstalling software, updated firmware. Won't come out of sleep mode. Sits approx 12 ft from router. I have to unplug and plug back in. Worked perfectly for 2 wks. Have researched all boards with no response. Notice guy below submitted same ? on 3-30-13

Sill doing it. I have resigned myself to unplug it each time. Also I have resigned myself to NEVER buy a POS HP product again. HP has known about this issue for at least 18 months and can't or won't fix it.
Can't wait for this POS to die...

Thank you for your post I have been able to locate 2 documents that you can follow to hopefully resolve the deep sleep issue. With the titles of the documents they state for specific wireless and power issues, but the steps with in the documents will help to resolve the issue

I have the same issue. Win 7 64 bit. Verizon broadband router with voice is my wireless connection. I changed all settings in the printer and in the router. No success. See my post that I filed before i saw this one.

I have both a Verizon Wireless Broadband Router (WiFi via Verizon 4G) with our 8620 printer connected to the router. When the printer hibernates / sleeps, the touch screen goes completely black (off). When I touch the screen, the screen turns on with a black background (noteably different from when it is off), but does not return to the home screen and remains "frozen". Pressing the power button also does not resolve the issue as the power button is no longer responsive.
Noting a prior commentor indicating they used Verizon's broadband service, I resetup the Wireless setting of the printer from the Verizon connection to our AT&T DSL connection (via a NetGear wireless router) and the printer began working again! No more "frozen" screens on the printer, power button works, it wakes from sleep / hibernate without issue.
I'm guessing that when the printer is reinitialized after hibernation / sleep, it attempts to reconnect or reawake the wireless connection it has with the wireless network it's connected to. For whatever reason, a regular wireless router will accept this form of handshake while the Verizon router / modem will not.
Either way, it's only a minor inconvenience for me and I hope this helps others. Also, printer software / firmware is updated to current, etc etc on other troubleshooting points including the not so relevant HP help documents. This is most likely a shared issue between Verizon hardware and HP hardware, and probably will only be resolved with HP doing a workaround (as I suspect Verizon disabled this feature for a reason - this is entirely my opinion as I have no evidence as such).
