Re: Scan coming up with msg FAILED TO OPEN A SESSION ON THE DEVICE

If you are using Snow Leopard and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:

Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall <<<< Scrubber Option
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish

Restart your Mac

Now, run a Software Update.

Finally, download and install the "Full Featured" Driver and Software from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.

Re: Scan coming up with msg FAILED TO OPEN A SESSION ON THE DEVICE

Hi,

I followed your advice & I *thought* I'd done a successful scan, but a subsequent attempt gave the same error. Any other ideas/advice? The machine is a Mac Mini on Lion. Another Lion desktop doesn't have the same problem.

Re: Scan coming up with msg FAILED TO OPEN A SESSION ON THE DEVICE

Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

Restart your Mac.

Reset the printing system:

- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and then next to the "Use" pulldown, select the printer model (not AirPrint). Wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Try scanning from your Mac. Use Image Capture app in your Applications folder.

Click once on the scanner on the left side, then click on Show Details along the bottom. Along the right side you will see LOTS of options for scanning and saving.

Re: Scan coming up with msg FAILED TO OPEN A SESSION ON THE DEVICE

Thanks, but this wasn't necessary. The scanner now seems to be working. Maybe it needed another restart. I'll give you kudos on the original post. I'm kind of glad as doesn't the download install a whole lot of HP s/w in addition to what you just need?

Re: Scan coming up with msg FAILED TO OPEN A SESSION ON THE DEVICE

The link installs a bunch of drivers, but no software (apps) that go in your Applications folder.

Re: Scan coming up with msg FAILED TO OPEN A SESSION ON THE DEVICE

Yeah - I meant "drivers" as vs "apps" when I said "software". The point/question was whether any of it was superfluous or not...

Re: Scan coming up with msg FAILED TO OPEN A SESSION ON THE DEVICE

Yup, much of it is superfluous as there are certainly models in the set that you do not own.

A simple Software Update should download the drivers only for the devices that are connected or you are trying to connect to your Mac.
