Scanner Error - Deskjet F4435

Just bought a new deskjet F4435 AIO to replace my old HP psc 1350 that wasn't supported anymore.  Set up my new deskjet when I got home and at my first crack of trying to scan with it, it scanned half the page and crapped out.  Now the lights on the deskjet flash and indicate a scanner error.  I've tried turning it off, than on, even unplugged it for a while, but as soon as I turn it back on the lights flash indicating scanner error.  Any idea how to remove the error would be appreciated.  Or did I get a lemon?
