Scanner will not work on HP Officejet 6500 Wireless with MacBook Pro

I have the Officejet 6500 Wireless all-in-one and can print fine but the scanner will not work even after implementing all of the suggestions on the website.  I have recently installed Mac OSX 10.6.8 but I had the same problem with the previous software as well.  Scanning worked fine until the last few months.  I keep getting the message that "HP Scan Pro quit unexpectedly" or "Sorry, an unknown error has occurred" but no further information.  I have re-installed the HP software twice but got nowhere.  What can I do????

Try scanning using Image Capture in your Applications folder.  Click on your scanner on the left side, then on "Show Details" along the bottom.

I have an Imac running OSX 10.5.8 and cable connected to an HP all in one officejet 6500 E709a. Installed using disc supplied and which says compatible with Mac.  Printing works fine and although there is an HP SCAN 3 icon in the dock and a scanning page opens, the connection is momentary before returing to the scan page. Pressing the scan button on the machine gives a message of No scan options.   The unit worked previously connected to windows.
