Scanning problem with Officejet pro 8500, macBook pro on OS X 10.6.2.

Hi all,

My config is MacBook Pro on OS X 10.6.2, i'm printing through an ethernet router (local network + gateway) to the 8500. The setup was installed on 10.5 but i recently upgraded to 10.6.2. I'm not 100% that this issue is correlated to that event but kind of remember it was working fine before...

Symptoms: prints correctly from pc, but cannot scan from printer nor from PC as previously. Mac is "invisible" from printer but printer is completly visible from Mac (all config looks good). 8500 is on automatic IP (assigned by router with DHCP server).

I tried resetting printer (semi hard reset i think they call it, the one with turn off for 30s, press 6 and # for 10 s) but no result. I don't know what version of drivers i have but when i try to update, i get the message that everything is up to date.

Any idea on the root cause?

Thanks,

Fabrice

Re: Scanning problem with Officejet pro 8500, macBook pro on OS X 10.6.2.

You still have the old 10.5 HP software on your Mac.  Let's get rid of it:

Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Apple keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled, which is why we don't run this thing all the time)
Click Continue
Let the scrubber do it's thing.

Now, run a Software Update.

Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax (use the '-' and '+' buttons).

You do not need the software now since Snow Leopard has both print & scan drivers built-in. Scan from Preview or Image Capture apps. Scanning from the front panel of the printer does not yet work.

Re: Scanning problem with Officejet pro 8500, macBook pro on OS X 10.6.2.

Thanks a lot PrintDoc, problem solved.

I followed "almost every instruction", just answered yes when asked at the end to install new software after installing printer, looks like it wasn't going any further without installing that software. Maybe because i downloaded the latest drivers from Apple website before following your procedure?

Now i scan directly from preview, i'm back to a simple & efficient system, i love it! :-)

Thanks again.

Thanks

Re: Scanning problem with Officejet pro 8500, macBook pro on OS X 10.6.2.

I have an 8500A Plus, networked to one PowerBook Pro and 2 Quad Core Towers via Ethernet, and I have tried everything in this forum, and can only get the scanner working for a while, then it stops and I get the 'Failed to open a session on the device' message again. I have tried to scan through Preview as well as the Preferences Pane and get the same message.

My only workaround at this point is to use a USB drive plugged into the HP 8500 and scan using the controls on the machine. This is not adequate for most of my needs. Does anyone know if Lion solves these problems? I have lost over 10 hours in the last month alone checking forums and trying to solve this problem. For a $200 printer it has cost me many times its cost in billable hours. Is there a real solution out there?

What version of OS X?  What router?  From where did you get the HP software for your Mac?

Re: Scanning problem with Officejet pro 8500, macBook pro on OS X 10.6.2.

All 3 Macs running 10.6.8.

PB Pro - 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo

2 Towers - 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Computers and printer are on Ethernet  (NetGear Hub)

ISP is Verizon Fios 25/25

The first time I got the software download from a link on this site on a different post:

HP_Installer_Officejet_Full_Group05_10.3.dmg

That didn't work

The second time I got the download from the Apple site

HPPrinterDrivers2.8.dmg

As suggested in a different post

Each time I did a full uninstall per instructions on this site, deleted printers, installed software and reinstalled printers.

When I try to import from scanner in Preview, I get the message 'Failed to open a session on the device'

I appreciate any suggestions you have.

It could be your hub.  Hubs can do odd things, switches do a better job.

Also, there are know problems with Verizon FIOS routers.  Read more here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-networking-and-wireless/Connection-problems-with-Verizon-FIOS-A...

Re: Scanning problem with Officejet pro 8500, macBook pro on OS X 10.6.2.

Hello,

I have gone through the steps however I still cannot use the scanner. The message shows "Failed to open a session on the device". I believe it was working before I updated to OS X 10.7.3 but I'm not entirely sure. Please help! Thanks!

Do you have HP software that was loaded on your Mac before you got 10.7?  Have you tried to download and install this: support.apple.com/kb/DL907
