Thanks for getting back to me. I did install the HP software that came with the printer before I upgraded to 10.7. I have just installed the drivers you recommended, but the scanner is still not working- still showing "failed to open a session on the device"

Let's uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
Finally, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page. I would point you to the exact place, but not sure what exact model you have.

Hello!
Thanks for the response. I don't see Hewiett Packard in my Applications, therefore I couldn't proceed with the "Scrubber" option. I searched using "finder" but I couldn't find it either. Other than that, I followed through the rest of the steps and I can use the printer no problem, but still cannot use the scanner. Is there another way I can uninstall all hp software on my computer, without having access to the HP uninstaller? Thanks!

So, another thing - is your Mac really at 10.6.2? If so, go to the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen and choose Software Update. Do this over and over until there are no more.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear- my mac is 10.7.3. Would that affect the compatibility? Thanks!

Oh, sorry, I was going off the title. This scanner should work fine with 10.7. How is the printer connected - USB?
In the mean time, download and install this: support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Next, reset the printing system:
- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
Finally, restart your Mac and try scanning again.

I did the same. It did not work. Preview crashes if more than one page is scanned. HP is dreadful !!!

Scan with Image Capture. Select Show Details, then Combine into Single Document on the right side.

What I do is shut the printer off for 2 minutes. Then restart, and the scanner works.
I use Image Capture, or Preview as a test measure.
Usually the scanner will not work if there is a software update either with HP or Apple.
After starting the printer up I have had no trouble with the scanner.
