Snow Leopard - Time Capsule - Office Jet 6500 Fax/Scan/Card Reader Issues

I haven't seen any posts related to having an Office Jet 6500 connected through Apple Time Capsule on a ground up Snow Leopard installation.  I managed to get the printer working, but not the fax, scan, or card reader capabilities when it's connected to the Time Capsule.  I've followed whatever documentation is posted; however, it's not working.  My Mac does recognize the fax and scan queues when the printer is directly connected to the Mac.  Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks...

Re: Snow Leopard - Time Capsule - Office Jet 6500 Fax/Scan/Card Reader Issues

Hi MacMike,   I spotted this in a similar question in another thread (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.id=Macintosh&thread.id=2663), and I think it applies to all time capsule, airport type of connections:

From Rickster:

"I think the issue is that scanning is not supported when connected via USB to an Airport.   This is the same situation as Leopard.  Scanning is not supported via USB connection to Airports.     This is a limitation of the Airport, only printing is supported via USB port connections.

As a test, connect your Photosmart 2610 directly to your Mac with USB cable - print and scan should both work fine. "

Are you connected to the Time Capsule via wireless?  How are you trying to scan?

Re: Snow Leopard - Time Capsule - Office Jet 6500 Fax/Scan/Card Reader Issues

My Mac is connected to the Time Capsule via Ethernet cable, and I've tried with Air Port on and off.  The previous post indicates this functionality may not be supported via Air Port, so I'll have to look into that further.  In the meantime I guess I'll have to plug the printer directly into the Mac, as it's the main computer in the house, and either hook up another printer or figure something else out to have other devices (i.e. laptops) print to one location.

Scanning should work with either Ethernet or wireless connection to your Airport.  If it does not lets work on that.

It will NOT scan with a USB connection to your Airport.

Re: Snow Leopard - Time Capsule - Office Jet 6500 Fax/Scan/Card Reader Issues

Had to sort out a problem with my iPhone upgrade... now back to this one.  My iMac is connected to Time Capsule via Ethernet (AirPort is currently off on the iMac).  The OJ 6500 was connected to Time Capsule via USB.

I currently have the OJ 6500 connected via USB in to the iMac and am able to Print, Fax, Scan, and access a SD card.  It seems when it goes through the Time Capsule I get the issue.

I see a few other threads have come into the forum and I'll check those out as well.

"The OJ 6500 was connected to Time Capsule via USB."

Again, the Airport will ONLY PRINT through the USB port. It will not Scan!

Re: Snow Leopard - Time Capsule - Office Jet 6500 Fax/Scan/Card Reader Issues

I have a new iMac with Snow Leopard WiFi connection to time capsule and an Officejet 6500 connected to the Time Capsule via hard-wired ethernet.

I can Print and Scan and send faxes without any problem. (I haven't tried receiving a fax yet). I haven't been able to use the card reader to transfer the files to my mac yet, still trying to figure out how to do that.

To set up the printer, I simply plugged in the ethernet cable, went to the print & Fax menu of System Preferences and selected add a printer. it automatically detected the printer and fax (2 separate devices). They both worked perfectly without further configuration. To scan from Preview, you do have to select 'include network devices' in the File -> Import from scanner menu, but the printer/scanner shows up and works automatically from there.

Not sure if this helps, but it should work as you have it connected...

Re: Snow Leopard - Time Capsule - Office Jet 6500 Fax/Scan/Card Reader Issues

I still do not have it working, but that is because I haven't had time to even try anything out lately.  I'm going to try out these suggestions and see if anything else has been posted.
