I am currently running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8, and today I opened up HP Scan Pro and attempted to use my HP Photosmart 4480 to make a scan when I got the message: "Sorry, scanner could not be initialized. (Scanner not found.)" I have used this printer with my MacBook Pro since the summer of 2008 with no problems, yet, all of a sudden, I can't make a scan for a homework assignment! Could someone please help me out; unlike the vast majority of forum discussions up here, which involve people running into problems after upgrading to Snow Lepord, I have done nothign of that sort, I am simply a student unable to use the scan function of my All-in-One device.

I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8 and installed my HP Photosmart 2610 all-in-one but it won't scan. Printing and fax are working fine but message when scanning reads "The application HP Scan Pro quit unexpectedly".
Can anyone help with a solution if there is one??????

I am having the same problem, notice of scanner not found. I can print fine using a wireless connection to my new Deskjet F4180 using OSX 10.5.8. But I cannot scan. The HP Help tells me it cannot help because I am not connected to the internet, even though I am looking at the HP support page in the center of my screen.
I reloaded the software since it seems the HP download does not contain a driver for the scan and also has connect problems. Since I can not get any help there, perhaps someone can help me here.
Thanks, Charliechips

Let's reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click the print queue area and select Reset Printing System.
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

I have a client with the same problem. Uninstalling the software using the HP Uninstaller program and redownloading and reinstalling the software did not resolve the problem. Also, resetting the printing system did not resolve the problem. The error message still appears when attempting to scan. Printing working fine.

I have the same problem. I also uninstalled downloaded the driver software again. This time it won't even find the all in one in the setup assistant. it prints fine, but no scan.

Uninstall using the scrubber option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Now, run a Software Update.
Next, reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click the print queue area and select Reset Printing System.
Finally, download and install the software from here.

I also just upgraded to 10.5.8 on my Mac Quicksilver.
I cannot even open HP Scan Pro 7.4.6. It goes to open and then "quits unexpectedly." I tried it with the scanners (4800 series and 5590 -- both of which worked fine before the system upgrade) plugged into a hub and thehn directly into the back of the MAc.
The problem seems to be a conflict between Scan Pro and the OS 10.5.8. ANyone have any solutions or suggestions?

Read my post above about using the scrubber. Then install the 10.5 software from here.
