Trouble installing Officejet 6500 Drivers

I've purchased an Officejet 6500 (not wireless) and I can't get the drivers to install on my Mac. (I also have a VMWare image running Windows XP and the printer works fine on there).

When I run setup, I've tried running the easy install. The setup detects the printer and appears to run successfully, and then the setup wizard comes up I skip the fax setup as I don't have a phone line, so it's not useful to me. I'm then prompted to add a Print Queue. The printer is listed as a Bonjour printer (wired networking). I select it, and it tries to auto select a driver, but fails. I try to manually select the driver, but there is only a driver listed for the Fax. The regular print driver doesn't appear anywhere in the list. 

I've also tried running a custom install to just install the print drivers. Same result, except the Fax driver is not listed (obviously). 

I've tried rebuilding the permission tables on the drive, but that didn't fix anything. 

My next attempt will be to remove Gutenprint and run setup again. An analysis of fs_usage output during the install did not seem to indicate an attempt to install the drivers on the drive. I suppose it's possible that there's a naming conflict that causes the installer to skip the driver or something. 

I also tried installing drivers for the Officejet Pro 8500, just to see what would happen, but they failed to install as well (Fax installed, but print did not).

I've tried installing both from the included disk and from the driver package I downloaded from the HP support site. Same results. 

I'm running 10.5.6. Intel Mac.

Reset the Mac print system as follows, reboot, then try adding the printer again.
