There is new software available from HP to help you print your documents on both sides of the paper. The software is as universal as the printing system permits, and even if your printer doesn't meet the recommendations you may still be able to use this software.
Here are the recommendations for your printer:
- You should have fairly private access to the printer because documents are printed as two separate print jobs, one for each side. If another job arrives between the two you will probably not get what you wanted.
- Prints on cut sheet paper (not roll fed)
- Does NOT have more than 2 paper trays*
- Does NOT have multiple output bins*
- Does NOT support paper sizes larger than Legal such as Tabloid or A3*
- Trays and bins for your printer are configured like one of the devices shown in the "Read Me" portion of the installer.*
* The software attempts to support many printers and while meeting the recommendations shown improves your chances of success you may still find the program helps for other devices. Refer to appendix A of the "Read Me" for some hints that may help you to be successful.
While most testing has been done with HP printers, the universal nature of this software does not restrict it to HP printers. HP will only provide technical support for HP printers, but if your printer meets the recommendations the software may work for you even if it is not an HP printer.
The software consists of a single application that is installed as a PDF Workflow. PDF Workflows appear when you click the PDF button in your print dialog. Further information and instructions are included in the "Read Me" file.
The "Read Me" file is shown during the installation process. I suggest you Save or Print the file for future reference.
You can find the software on hp.com by searching for "Two-sided Printing Software" or by clicking this link:

Sorry, I didn't do a very good job of describing who might want this software.
If your printer has an option in the print dialog to print on both sides of the paper, either automatically or manually, then you really don't need this software.
But if your printer has no such option and you would still like to print your documents on both sides of the paper this software can help you do it. The even numbered pages will be printed, then you will be asked to put those pages back in the printer with specific instructions on how to do that. Once that is done the odd pages are printed on the back of the even even pages and you have your complete document, printed on both sides.

This works GREAT for documents that are not already PDF - when I try to use it with a document that is already a PDF (which is a lot of what I get sent and have to print...) it says:
"Saving a PDF File when printing is not supported. Instead, choose File > Save."
Please advise - I have lots of documents I need to print from PDF.
Thanks,
DLP

What application are you using, Adobe Reader? It works fine for me when I use Preview (I don't have Reader on my system). Using Preview may be one way to solve this problem.
Another possibility is to open the file directly in the Two-sided Printing software because it is simply an application that opens and prints PDF files. If you want to do this I suggest you put an alias of the application into your applications folder, or even directly into the dock. You may move the actual application if you wish but if you do put an alias in the PDF Services folder so you can still use it in other applications. You can find the app here:
/Library/PDF Services/Two-sided Printing.app
It is sometimes difficult to know how much detail to give, if these instructions aren't clear I can be more specific. Let me know how this works out.
