You are correct that the old version of the maintenance utility does not work in Mac Os 10.7.  Unfortuantley an updated version is not yet available.  My suggestion is to keep checking the DesignJet 30/130 support site on hp.com for updates.

Does that mean that I will not be able to maintain and calibrate my printer under Lion (which renders it totally useless as it is in a state where it can not print without maintenance)?

If yes, do you know if I will be able to use it in a Windows environment on my Mac using VMWare or a similar virtual system?

I really would appreciate some info on whether this update of the maintenance utility is coming soon or if I have to wait several months??

I do not have any timeline as to when or if the software will be update for Mac OS 10.7. 

Yes you could use Bootcamp, VMWare or Parallels to use the Windows version of the software to retain access to the maintenance aspects of the printer.
