Very strange behaviour Photosmart B9180, prints with huge amount of ink

Hi all,

the issue is caused by Apple Update for HP Printer Drivers Version 2.7.

This is not the only failure in this package. (I am not sure if it is brilliant to use this same Update for both MacOS 10.6 and 10.7.)

Of course restoring the "hp" folder in /Library/Printers/ using TimeMachine should solve the issue.

Clearest way to solve the issue is to do following steps:

- Remove HP printer(s) from printer list (System Preferences > Print and Fax (MacOS 10.6) / Print and Scan (MacOS 10.7)

- Move the whole "hp" folder from /Library/Printers/ into Trash

- Download and install HP Drivers Update Version 2.6 from following link:

ftp://hppsu2_6:7iy*HW4i@ftp.usa.hp.com/

- Restart the Mac

- Add printer in System Preferences ...

I could not find the HP Printer Drivers v.2.6 on the apple web-site

I marked this support entry as " Solved " to help other users find this solution.

But going back to an old driver is not a real solution of course. HP must fix the problem and roll out a updated driver version.

The other issue i had with this new driver was that adobe photoshop crashed when printing from this application.

Rolling back to the old driver also solved this issue.

I noticed that nobody from HP aided this posting.... that says enough

I'm having the same issue. A flood of ink, tip the page sideways and it will run off. Very big mess.  

Snow Leaopard, latest update and Mac Pro.

right, if you installed the Apple update for hp printer drivers, version 2.7 this issue will occur. 

So please go back to version 2.6 like written some days ago in message 21 of this thread. 

Hoping Apple will soon release next version of hp printer drivers (maybe 2.7.1 or 2.8?).

Thanks!  I'm enjoying the process of preparing prints to show, well minus the drowning in pricy ink part!

I like the photo rag and textured papers from Hahnemühle.  I've also been using Harman photo Baryta but haven't quite gotten the B&W results I'm looking for.  I've found that trial and error of ICC profiles and printer settings is a must.  I like the B9180 since it has the built in color correction capability.   Here's a link to some of my images: http://mevns.500px.com/

Your solution to use Apple's 2.6 driver set solved my issue!  

BTW, I'm using Aperture 3.13 and Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Holding off on the Lion update for a while..
