mac and hp scanner

when trying to scan an a4 page and attach it to an email or anything for that matter it will only print random bits of the a4 page. i have noticed grey dotted lines on the preview and when i try to drag them they will revert to what ever they want when i try an print the page. help its driving me mad. many thanks

What version of OS X?  What scanner?

 

What software are you using to scan?

How is it connected?  If wireless, what router?
