For getting the Laserjet connected to your network, there is one more option. Since your original wireless-router (Netgear DG834) was compatible with the Laserjet, we can convert that into a plain access-point and have the Laserjet connect to it.
Here are the steps:
- Log into the Netgear DG834 configuration page, disable the DHCP server (we want the IP address to come from the Netgear DGN2000).
- Change the SSID on the DG834 if it's the same as the DGN2000.
- Change the channel on the DG834 to a channel that is as far away as possible from the DGN2000. For example, if the DGN2000 is on channel 1, move the DG834 to channel 11.
- Connect an Ethernet cable between the LAN port on the DG834 to the LAN port of the DGN2000.
- Power cycle the Laserjet 1022NW.
- Open System Preferences
- Open the Print & Fax application
- Click the [+] button to add a printer.
- Select your Laserjet.
- If the "Print Using" menu box didn't find your Laserjet model (it should since you can print using USB), then manually select a driver by choosing "Select a driver to use ..." and pick one of the Laserjet models that is close to yours that uses the Gutenprint v 5.1.3 driver.

Something you said last time almost made me think that the breakthrough had arrived Jim. I had been trying to connect
using my old iBook G4 - but your last post highlighted something I should have thought of before - I checked, and the new
MBP has the latest driver installed for the 1022.
However, although the printer was shown in Print & Fax as the default printer (a good start) it wouldn't print. So I (rashly, perhaps)
deleted the printer, and ran through the whole set up sequence again. Now I can't add the 1022 at all.
So from this new perspective - latest driver installed, can you see why i can't re-add the 1022 - and why it won't print?
(I'd like to think it's possible to fix this without the complication - to me - of 2 routers on the network.)
Thanks for all your suggestions so far. I keep hoping the next one will do it.

While I agree that having to use two wireless-routers seems like an unnecessary complication, I would still like you to try this at least temporarily. The outcome of this experiment will tell me whether or not the Laserjet wireless subsystem is works at all with the new Netgear's WPA-PSK encryption.

OK - I'll see if it works (needs to be tomorrow now) but let me check if I understand the set
up properly:
I plug the old router DG834 into the filter/splitter, check + adjust the settings as you specify,
and then join the new router DGN2000 to it via an ethernet cable. Turn off/on the printer.
Then check to see if the printer is shown as an option on MBP, and able to print?
Are you hoping that the old router will now find the printer and put it on the network?
And is the new router still the one connecting to the web, at the higher speed and with WAP?
Is this for diagnostic purposes only - or might it need to become a permanent set up?

First, turn off the new router, turn on the old router and then make the adjustments as per my previous post. The critical changes to the old router will be to turn off the DHCP server and to change the SSID so that it is different than the new router's SSID.
The sequence is most important. It will be quite confusing if the DHCP servers from the new and older router's are running simultaneously. And if we don't make the SSID different amongst the old and new router, the Laserjet may attempt to connect to the new router which is our problem at the moment.
Yes -- I'm hoping the Laserjet will be able to connect to the old router and be discovered by your MBP.
Yes -- the new router will be connected to the web and you can run it at the highest speed. All computers in your home should connect to the new router and only the Laserjet should remain connected to the old router.
At the moment, this is for diagnostic purposes. I hope if doesn't have to be a permanent setup.

I disconnected the DGN2000 and logged into my DG834G.
(The SSID of this router is different to the SSID on the DGN2000.)
I then deselected 'Use Router as DHCP Server' (under LAN IP Setup), and changed the channel,
so that one is on channel 1 and the other on 13.
I then connected an ethernet cable between the 2 routers, disconnected power cable from the printer,
reconnected it and then turned it on. Then switched on DGN2000.
I selected the DG834G from the Airport menu, went to Print & Fax and tried to add printer. Couldn't add anything.
Tried again, this time by selecting a file to print - and clicking 'add printer' - couldn't add anything.
Switched to DGN2000 on menubar, and tried adding printer. Same again - nothing shows as available to add, and
the Add button is greyed out in the Printer Browser.
Everything appears to be wired up OK, could you confirm the procedure was correct - and advise?
UPDATE: since I had the old router out, I reset it to the old configuration after completing the above
experiment and ran it as the only router - ie. so the network reverted to the situation as it was before I
updated to a new router and new MBP. (I have this set up with no protection on the network.)
Using the new MBP, and old router, I set up the printer again, and was printing wirelessly in about 2 minutes.
I then changed the setting on the old router to introduce WAP security. The printer would no longer work
wirelessly - printer window shows "connecting" but there is no activity. As soon as I changed the setting back to
open/no security, it printed out the 2 jobs that were pending from the previous test.
So it looks like the HP 1022nw will not connect with a router that has WPA. What do you suggest I do?

UPDATE 2: I put the old router away and created the network with the new router (DGN2000) - this time
without WAP - as open/unprotected. The HP 1022nw is shown as the default printer, but the status is
"idle". The printer window shows it as "connecting" - but there is no activity and it does not print.

In this latest setup, can you access the printer's internal webpage?
Also, in this latest setup, have you tried resetting the MBP's printer system (seet his link)?
I'm afraid I'm running out of ideas. I don't have access to a Laserjet 1022NW and so I am not able to duplcate your issue.

Yes I can get to the printer's webpage, and I have tried resetting the printer system.
It looks to me like there is some fundamental incompatibility between the Netgear DGN2000 and
the HP 1022nw - since it seems impossible to print wirelessly even with an open network.
There is a printer firmware update on the HP site, but I am very dubious about trying this after finding
that the driver update file available was corrupted. I don't have sufficient faith to try it - in case it
finishes off the printer completely.
Do you know if it is possible to communicate with this printer by bluetooth - and if so how?
And would you be able to highlight the problem I'm experiencing to the relevant person at HP?
I still have had no reply to my original request for support, sent to them over a week ago.
Thanks for your ideas + support, Jim - I very much appreciate it.

If you can browse the printer's internal web page, then connectivity between your MBP and the printer is working.
Is this true -- can you browse the printer's web pages from teh DGN2000?
