officejet 8500, cannot set up at end of install,

Downloaded software, installed as instructed.  It asks me to "Set-up", when I try it flips back to "find your device" and does not show my "device".  I cannot use the printer or any of the other functions.

Before I downloaded the driver, I was able to at least use the wireless printing function with a generic driver.

What version of OS X?  Is the software you are installing meant for that version of OS X?  What router?

MacBook Pro,   Mac OS X10.7.3

Officejet 8500a plus

 

I have downloaded the software for my printer.  It appears to go through all steps until the "set-up".  When I click OK (or next) the screen reverts back to asking to select my hardware.  There is no list. I do have the USB plugged in.  I cannot get any farther than this screen.

 

I can print, but that is all.   I don't know if the printing is using the HP software just installed or the generic software the Mac found for me.  There is an HP icon on my desktop now.

 

When I try to scan I learn that no scanner is installed.  I am able to use the scanner with my Dell laptop and it works with other laptops.  But, I would really like to scan into the new computer!

First, download and install this: support.apple.com/kb/DL907

 

Restart your Mac

 

Let's repair disk permissions:

 

1. Open Finder and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.  Open it.

2. Click your "Macintosh HD" on the left side, then click "Repair Disk Permissions" along the bottom.

 

When it has finished, try the install again.
