Did you reset the printing system as described above?
If so, let's make sure that Lion is healthy with the 10.7.3 Combo update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484
Is this a USB connection? Have you changed USB cables and changed the USB port on your Mac? Do not use a USB hub, plug directly into your Mac.
If it is a network connection, what router are you using? Have you changed the Ethernet cable/port?

This post is quite long but please bear with it, I feel the end is in sight.
So lets re-cap. Drivers are now in the Library, I have reset the prining system exactly as described. I have installed the comb update (2nd attempt, first attempt would not install), I have reset the print system again, Tried several restarts, the usb cable has been checked using my completley independant laptop (windows) it works, I have tried several of the USB sockets, Note the machine is not networked or using a hub, it's a stand alone machine on my desk at home / office.
Note on the printer front panel / screen under "Display wired summary" I see Hostname: HP588619, IP Adress: Not applicable, MAC:001e0b588619. I guess this means the printer can see the MAC
When i look to the system preferences / print fax, the rectangular box on the right contains the message "No printers are available. Click Add (+) to set up printer". The subsequent box has three option under Protocol: HP Jetdirect - Socket, Internet Printing Protocol - IPP and Line Printer Daemon - LPD, Under Address when I type in the printer address HP588619 (taken from the printer front pannel) an error message appears under the address box "Invaild or incomplete address."
Using the HP Jetdirect - Socket option, I ignore the error message, Under Print Using option select "select printer software" a list appears, select HP Photosmart C6200 series, select OK, select Add,
Error message "Unable to verify the printer on your network, unable to connect to HP588619 due to an error, would you still like to create queue? select Continue, Goes to setting up. Wow now it's in the rectangular box refferred to above, select open print queue, printer seems to be there. but....
Open document, send to print, printer is shown, options selected all ok, the error message "Unable to locate printer HP 588619,
So close yet still so far away, It seems the printer name is now the issue,
Any ideas please?

Ok so some good news this little problem is moving on but not solved. Update:-
I delted the printer and cleared the print list. NOTE, THIS MAY HELP OTHERS. I now know why I couldn't clear the print list. If I had worked this bit out first maybe a lot of the subsequent steps could have been avoided. When trying to follow the instruction of cltr + click I didn't get the "clear printer list" message. Note press ctrl first ,hold, then click, not both at the same time or click then ctrl it doesn't work. Moving on:-
I changed the printer name from the numeric name given on the printer screen / pannel to "HP Photosmart C6200 series", I also checked the printer sharing options, to be honest I can't remember if they where correct or not but I have now have selected "all users can print" or similar wording.
The print job now sends to the printer (100%) but I get the message "Printer busy" I've treid shutdown - restart, cleared the print list and installed again, all futile.
Ideas please, how to resole the printer busy error?

We are close. Let's reset the printing system again with these instructions:
- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Hold the Control button on your keyboard while clicking in the rectangle listing your printers and select "Reset Printing System."
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab (not the IP or other tabs, only the Default tab) on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Printer list reset no problems.
Plus sign selected. The Add printer box appears, Select Default then I've waited for over 10 minutes but no printer list is generated. The add button does not light up.
FYI - Under the Fax tab I see Bluetooth DUN, nothing under the Windows tab and as previously described under the IP tab.
Thanks for your continued patience with this.

What router are you using? It may be blocking communication with the printer. Restart the router by pulling its power plug momentarily.

My wirless router is a D-Link. I had already had the same thoughts and tried with the router unplugged, to be sure I've just gone through the process off clearing the printer list again with router unplugged. Still nothing after clicking the (+) add printer button the next box apperars empty, ie no printers listed to choose from.

I assume you not only pulled the router power plug, but you plugged it back in and waited for it to restart, right? And still nothing? Does the router have current firmware?

Yep unplugged, went through whole process of clearing the print list resetting etc, still nothing, so plugged it back in, tried all over again with it plugged in, nothing. Note. The printer is not networked through the router we are talking about a direct USB connection between the printer and MAC desktop machine. I'm not really sure what you mean by latest firmware. The wireless connection for my independant windows laptop, my wife's ipad / windows work laptop & home laptop all work ok for wireless internet. My windows laptop also runs the printer ok (direct usb connection). I can take the router out the system completley, ie turn it off, while trying to sort this printer problem with the MAC desktop but I don't think the problem is there. It seems the machine is just not seeing the printer drivers in the libray.
