problem printing for desktop mac OS 10.5.8 to Officejet 8500A

I have my Officejet 8500A connected to my Mac OS 10.5.8 G4 by usb cable. When I try to print, the name will come up on the printing status, but the printer will say (Printer busy (status: 0xe00002e9). In order to get it to print, I have to turn off my 8500A printer and restart, sometimes several times.
I also have a MacBook Pro OS 10.6.8 that i also have to restart the printer when printing wireless. Could this be a compatibility issue with Mac's? My kids have no issues printing wireless from their PC's
