psc 750 Waiting for printer to become available""

So I have a new iMac with 10.6.2 and gutenprint 5.2.3. I have an HP PSC 750 which

originally printed OK, but now just thinks about printing. The printer dialog for the

printer just says "Waiting for printer to become available". Sometimes it starts to

pull a piece of paper through and then just stops. It is connected directly to the machine

by USB. The printer control panel says nothing.

I have tried all the suggestions of removing the printer, and then "reset printing system"

and re-adding the printer. I once managed to get it to print by rebooting the machine

but the next day (i generally don't turn the machine off) it had stopped printing again.

Rebooting everytime you want to print is really going to cut it.

Anyone got any suggestions ?

Have you replace the USB cable?  Make sure that you are not connecting through a USB hub.

I've not tried a different cable, but the same cable works just fine with my

macbook pro. I have tried both attached to a hub and directly attached

and the result is the same.

OK, are you sure the printer is not failing...it is pretty old.  Can you do a self test from the front panel Menu button?

The printer works fine from my macbook pro (also running 10.6.2, but is a few

updates behind my iMac).

Re: psc 750 Waiting for printer to become available""

Do you have any pre-10.6 software on the Mac?  If so, let's get rid of it:

Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Apple keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled, which is why we don't run this thing all the time)
Click Continue
Let the scrubber do it's thing.

Now, run a Software Update.

Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.

The machine is a new iMac and came as 10.6.2 so has no pre 10.6

software installed on it.

I have a new macbook connected to an HP Laserjet 3055 and have the same problem. Have you found an answer?

No, sorry, I have tried all the suggestions made here with no fix. Seems like some

update in 10.6.2 doesn't play well with HP printers.
