"Add Printer" window doesn't display DeskJet 6988 in Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I have a DeskJet 6988 printer that is connected wirelessly to my home network. I have two Macs, both running Snow Leopard that use Bonjour printing to connect to my DeskJet 6988. After upgrading, the "Add Printer" window wouldn't show my printer. I've installed HP Printer Drivers v2.1 for Mac OS X (available here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907) and also tried reconnecting my printer with an ethernet cable.

I was able to manually add my printer using the following steps:

 

- Install Mac OS X 10.6.1 using Software Update

- Install the latest HP Printer Drivers from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907 

- Open System Preferences and navigate to "Print & Fax"

- Click the "+" button in the bottom left hand corner of the "Print & Fax" Preference Pane

- Click the "IP" icon at the top of the "Add Printer" window

- Select "HP Jetdirect - Socket" from the "Protocol: " drop down box

- Type the IP address of your printer in the "Address: " field

- Make sure that the "Print Using: " drop down box reads "HP Deskjet 6980 series"

- Click "Add" in the bottom right hand corner of the "Add Printer" window 

 

Your printer should work! The key ingredient is to select "HP Jetdirect - Socket" in the "Protocol" drop down box, I tried "Line Printer Daemon - LPD" and it didn't work.
