My HP5550 Deskjet ran out of paper and after I put the paper in in made a noise and I noted that the power light and the resume lights were flashing together. the cartridges are on the left and when I turn the power off they do not move. after turning the power back on the rollers turn for a short time but the light begin flashing again

Pull all of the paper out. Look in the front with a flashlight for any stray pieces of paper or broken parts. Turn the printer around, remove the rear door and look for the same thing.
Pull the power cord out of the back of the printer for 30 seconds to reset it. Plug back in, turn on, insert a neat stack of paper and try again.

Thanks for trying to help. Tried what you suggested but unfortunately it didn't work. Just the same as before, and nothing stuck anywhere.

Try pulling the power cord from the back of the printer while the printer is ON.

You mean while it is flashing? I did have the power disconnected when I opened the back etc. and when I reconnected and turned the printer back on there was no change in the flasing lights. I will give your suggestion a try. I did buy a HP Photosmart 5515 but haven't set it up yet. I also thought about a HP Photosmart 6510 but I'm not sure if it would fit. I know it's getting off the topic but do you have any opinion on the 5515 vs the 6510 if I can't get my printer to work?

The 6510 has the advantages of an automatic duplexer (print on both sides of the page automatically) and second paper tray for photo paper. Otherwise they are virtually identical. The 6510 is only about $10 more.

Thanks, I tried pulling the power wire from the back while the printer was on, with the flashing lights,. When i put it back in they recommenced flashing and things didn't change. Is it time to give up and set up the new printer? I thought that the 5515 could be set up to do double sided printing? Bye the way, thanks for all this help.

Well, I think your 5550 is dead, sorry.
You can get the 5515 to duplex, but it is manual. You have to print one side of the pages, restack and then re-insert back into the printer input tray for printing on the other side.
Auto duplexing is much easier and fully automatic.
