I had this problem when I first got the laptop about a month ago, I have only just worked it out from reading this post.

When I tried tapping the light LED nothing happened, happily for me the trackpad was always on, so working ok

It turns out i was double tapping the wrong bit...

You need to do it to teh right of the led, just a mm below.. and quite hard

My touchpad for my HP laptop occasionally gets stuck on lock as well. Double tapping the orange light doesn't always work but I found a slightly longer route to switch the touchpad back on. First, press the windows button to pull up the start menu. Next, type in "personalize" into the search box, and click down to "personalize your computer". Then, press tab until you highlight the button which says "change mouse pointers". Press enter. On the screen that opens, use tab and right button to get to "device settings." Then press enter on button that says "enable" this should unlock touch pad. Hope this works for you as well as it does for me.

This helped immensely!! I had to switch it to "touchpad" rather than "mouse" and then go to "security systems" all the way on the right side of the menu. THen I clicked "Enable" but it only worked for a second. I had to go back in and not only click "enable" but also "apply". Then it stays enabled and applies it to the computer settings!! Thank you so much. I did not have to reboot and din't lose all the information I had been working on!!

:))))

Duh!  If that worked, then it wouldn't be stuck, would it.

I have the same problem,  I started after driver update.  Tried to roll back the driver, but it did not work either.

There is a way to make it work without re-boot:

control panel > mouse >  device settings >  click on 'enable' - button.

Here is how to do it from the keyboard:

Press windows key

press 'down' until 'settings' is hilited, press enter, select control panel, press enter

press 'M',  Press enter

Use ctrl-tab to open the 'device settings' -tab

Press alt-e to enable the touchpad.

It is a pain to have to go through, but will work when you need to quickly activate the touchpad without re-booting the machine.

I am glad to hear others are having this problem, too.   I hope it means HP will fix it soon.

I GOT IT!!!

I had this problem of an HP laptop that I bought in 2012. So I was able to maneuver with a combination of

-the tab button

-the arrow keys

-the return button

-the windows button that opens the start menu

1) So I press the windows button to open the start menu

2) navigate to control panel

3) navigate to "Ease of Access"

4) navigate to "change how your mouse works"

5) On the next screen, I had to go all the way down to find Mouse Setting (under see also)

6) In the next window, there are six tabs (buttons pointers...).  The last one is Device Settings.  Go there

7) On that screen, there was an "enable" button.  I tabbed to that and pressed return. Bingo

Hope that helps someone!!

Um just thought I would put my 2 sense in on the unlocking the click mouse....You do tap the orange light twice. If it dont work your pressing to hard or not hard enough, but thats how you get the ennoying **bleep** to turn back on.

HP Recommended

softly double click the orange light on left top corner it turns it back on if you do it to hard or soft it may not work but this is 100% how it unlocks
