HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My 4.5-year-old HP Pavilion P7-1074 desktop was down last week. Planed to get a replacement on Black Friday or Boxing Day. But I do need to run some programs inside the desktop's hard drve. So I attatched my desktop's hard dive to my HP Pavilion 15 Notebook's USB port with an Enclosure.

The laptop could recognize the external hard drive as SYSTEM (F:) 62.2 MB free of 97.9 MB, OS (G:)1.11 TB free of 1.35 TB, and HP_RECOVERY (H:) 1.33 GB free of 11.0 GB. But I could not find out the programs I wanted to run.

I went into the BIOS to set the Boot order to Boot from USB first, but I could not get the result I expected. The laptop always boots from its own hard drive. I tried all three USB ports, no one worked.

Could somebody please help me?

Thanks a lot!

Hi @db69613,

Welcome to the HP forums! It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community. I understand that you need assistance with the HDD from your Desktop that is now connected to your notebook via USB. I’ll be delighted to assist you with this.

I am simply amazed at the levels of technical knowledge and technical skills that your possess. Hats off to you for that. That was very smart  of you! It has been a privilege to have shared this platform with you and work with you.

At the outset, the programs from a different version or session of windows will not work on another computer as it was installed on the original computer at that time. It is an installation and a software application, unlike data or information that can be accessed by any computer when the hard drive is connected. This is because any software install ties the application for that specific operating system installed on that specific computer at that time.

If the computer fails and the hard drive is accessed, all the content (like music, photos, videos and other information can be accessed) but the programs that were installed originally cannot be accessed and will not work on any other computer when connected externally.

However, if the Hard drive is working fine and windows is correctly installed, then the same hard drive can be installed on a different desktop PC and some of the programs should ideally work.

I hope this helps! Please let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope that the issue gets fixed without hassles.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to appreciate my efforts. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution”. If you require further assistance let me know and I will gladly do all I can to help.

Please take care now and do have a splendid week ahead.
