I also tried every solution offered on these 8 pages of "fixes." I updated the BIOS, removed/reinstalled the Tone Controls, Digital Persona, etc., and nothing ever worked. I finally got the idea to remove EVERYTHING on my laptop that had anything to do with HP Media Smart software. I don't use HP's software for anything anyway, so I figured this solution couldn't hurt. After all, the problems are all related to that software. Lo and behold, I have not experienced the problem for two months and counting. I'll post if the problem resurfaces.
Like most of you, this dv8-t will be my last HP notebook forever.
Good luck!

I have had this notebook since April 2010 and have experienced the wifi / bluetooth / bass / treble problem the entire time. I reluctantly sent my notebook back to HP and all that they did was replace the "Volume PCA Printed Circuit Assembly". They didn't touch my software and returned it within 1 week after I sent it.
I got it back 11/16/2010 and it ran without problems until Tuesday of this week (1/2/2011). It's now back to failing in the same manner. I originally thought that it was heat related because I could minimize the problem by placing a fan behind the computer near the air flow intake. I'm wondering if the printed circuit assembly is what fails due to heat and it gets worse over time.
Anyway, I'll be calling HP again and fighting with them about what to do next. I was assigned a case manager that claimed no technical knowledge and was completely useless. He claimed that HP has no knowledge of this problem even though the technical support reps are aware of it. I begged him to simply read the posts on the HP forum website but he refused to do so saying that he didn't have internet access. I'll let everyone know what happens this time around. I'm not going to give up on this before the warranty runs out. I don't think that we should have to keep disabling hardware and software capability just to get this very expensive notebook to operate properly.
What a shame ... I really like this notebook.

Hello,
I had the same problem with my dv8 1180ed for me it was the fifth time it had to go back to HP but they finally decided to do me an buy-back offer.
Verry strange because first they told me they could only offer me an repair and if I wanted my money back I had to go to my reseller.
But at everybody don't cheer too much when you got is back from HP because everytime I did and got dissapointed they replaced alot on mine but nothing worked! The last time is worked for 45 days.
It's sad that this small problem has so much impact I really liked the laptop it has features you could not find on any laptop.
The design, Blu-ray, fingerprint reader (I loved that because I had two accounts) 1 GB Hard drive (just a few laptops have that!)
remote control, 18" monitor
And last but not least although this is the problem of it all the "Quick Launc Buttons"
Everytime I called HP the say that they are not familiar with this problem but as everybody can see there are alot of reply's on this topic and this is only the topic for the dv8 and there are other HP models with the same problem
I tried to open an e-mail adress so that everybody could mail me there problems and that I can send them to HP
But there where not enough reactions I need more to make an good change!
For me it's to late mine will be sent back to HP but, if they just take notice to this problem and find the right solution I would love to keep it.

I have been reading this post with interest and tried everything suggested here including HP customer support - what a joke. My problem was that media smart button and tone control slider would never work after my laptop went to sleep or restarted. This made me think it was a power setting issue until I noticed that everything was ok until I installed my Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard. After that, media start wouldn't start and treble/bass controls would not work. I did a system restore and then everything worked again. So now, surprise, surprise I don't let windows install the drivers for my mouse and keyboard. Lo and behold, everything now works on my laptop. Day three by the way. Holding my breath as well in case I am wrong. So for others that have this problem, I hope this helps. My only other problem is bluetooth which drops in and out without any perceivable reason. I hope I can find a resolution for this. As a matter of interest, this is my first ever HP laptop and will probably be my last. Who need these dramas and the disgusting lack of support you get from customer (lack of ) support. Another By the Way, don't listen to those morons in customer support. They don't know **** and certainly do diddly squat to help

hello everyone, i know you are all really frustrated with this problem and are trying to find a fix immediately. the problem is that there isnt one. i had this problem a week after i bought it and went through everything. im a bit of a comp geek so i know what i was doing, and the only option i had left was to send it in. if you are experiencing this problem, use ur warranty and make them send you a box for repair. That's the only way to actually get it fixed without disabling the buttons.
the sad part is that its been about 3 months since i got my laptop from the repair, (they had to replace the entire button hardware) and it just started again. iv noticed that if i pick it up or put anything heavy on my desk my wireless turns off. the next day after that first encounter the treble/bass started to go off like crazy.
im out of warranty so for people like me the only solution so far that is working best is uninstall cyberlink dvd suite, disable the buttons, (people posted in thread already) and that's it.
If all fails you can do 1 more thing, unscrew your laptop and actually unplug the treble.bass unit and either replace it from parts ordered from eBay or something or just leave it as is. this will guarantee a fix but its dangerous and if u don't know what ur doing, u can mess up ur pc.

This is not a software issue if you are having the wifi problem. There is a software issue with tone control but it can happen in conjunction with the WiFi flickering.
The real cause is static buildup in the computer that affects the capacitive touch panel buttons. There is a ground pad for this panel but there is no force applied to the panel to secure it to the ground pad for a good connection. This is why it gets worse when it gets hot and also when it is moved.
Try doing this to demonstrate the actual problem. With one finger, push down on the quick launch button panel just above the f9 key. The exact point to push on is between the mute button and the volume slider. You may even be able to feel the panel move as if there was a spring loaded button under the plastic panel. You may notice that the Wifi and volume go nuts for a second but as long as your are applying pressure to that exact spot you can activate any of the buttons, specifically the Wifi without it flickering. This is because when you are holding it down, the panel is making good contact to the ground pad and allowing the static charge to be drained off. The ribbon cable can also come loose causing some issues.
HP is not going to fix the design flaw. They have already stopped making this model and they plan on selling extended service contracts so you can keep on sending it back to have a $5.00 (HP cost) part replaced that has the same design defect.
I am an engineer that actually designs the microchip test sockets for many of the major hardware and chip makers so I have some good knowledge of how a good design should go.
Since HP is not going to address this from an engineering standpoint, I guess I will. I am working on designing a revised grounding assembly to retrofit the existing defective panel assembly. I will let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks for the information. It makes complete sense to me. I will be among the first to apply any fix you come up with. You are right HP will never admit fault or come up with a permanent fix for this. I am vary interested to what you come up with.

I purchased my dv8 in April, by August I had to send it back for hardware replacement of the quicklaunch bar. Yesterday the issue began again, complet with the treble/bass and wifi button going haywire. So, today I spent an hour on the phone with HP Support, and made the representative access this forum and read, specifically, your posting about it being a design issue. He then forwarded your post to the hardware support team, and told me they would be replacing my motherboard with an upgrade to the dv9 motherboard. He told me the upgrade would be compatible with my dv8, and would remedy the problem for good. We will see... You seem to be pretty knowledeable, so do you think this should correct the issue?

Wow, that is amazing that they have an RMA action protocol now in place for this issue. Yes, it very well could solve the problem if the grounding circuit was redesigned in the DV9 to drain the static charge from the panels and quick launch buttons.
Please let us know if this solves the problem so we can pass the info on to HP tech when the issues comes up for the DV8 motherboards.
I am still going through the design to see where it can be improved. If the DV9 MB works that would be the best solution.
Thanks,
Brian

I am a little worried that HP may have been feeding you a story to make you think they are fixing it. I could be wrong but I cant find any spec for a DV9 laptop. The motherboard in the DV8 runs the entire length of the computer and I think that it is sized for our 18" inch screen form factor. This would mean that the only motherboard that would fit should be out of another 18" form factor laptop. The DV8t is the only one that is 18" .
Can you find out more info on what motherboard they are using? I hope that this is a final solution.
