Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
After replacing two X 2GB DDR3 SODIMMS with two X 4GB SODIMMS the system comes up with a Windows Error Recovery screen with two options:
1. Launch Startup Repair (reccommened)
Selcting this gives a "loading files..." screen followed by the HP logo and then back to the Windows Error Recovery screen.
2. Start Windows Normally
Starting Windows screen comes up followed by HP logo and the Windows Error Recovery screen.
The 8GB RAM is visible in BIOS.
Booting diags and running the memory diagnostic succeeeds.
Everything works normally after putting the 2X2GB SODIMMs back.
Identical behavior with two different laptops and two differnt sets of SODIMMs.
Upgrading BIOS did not change results.

The Crucial part number is CT3321850.
There's a Crucial material number too:
Crucial tech support told me that the J at the end means the SODIMMs are using high density chips and that there's a small chance that replacing them with SODIMMs built with less dense chips make a difference.
I'm skeptical since the RAM is recognized by BIOS and passes a memory test.

Sounds like you got the right ones.
Density does make a difference. The lower the better but if Crucial gave you those part numbers based on you running their memory scan tool, then crucial guarantees comptibility.
If you went generic Crucial, then this is the chip you should have gotten.
Or the 8 GB kit:
Methinks you bought the wrong chips.

The part numbers of what you gave and what I have are the same except for the J. Can you explain why the chip density on the SODIMM makes a difference? Isn't the pin out and timing of the 204 pin SODIMM identical?
