I wish I could tell you why your computer is crashing.  My computer crashes randomly, but not at the frequency as yours is.  I wish I could see it, cause I am sure I could fix it in minutes for you.  All I can tell you is that if it was crashing right out of the box, then there might be internal issues.  If you have updated drivers and the likes, then something is conflicting.  The safest thing to do is just reformat.   If you can purchase a large 1 - 2 TB external hard drive (they cost less then 60$ these days) and I always back up my photos, videos, docs on there.  You can also partition your current hard drive and save all back up on the second partition.  Then reformat by reinstalling windows through system boot.  Then update windows first, then update your graphic drivers last.  Problem hopefully should be fixed, never had an issue after a reformat, in fact computers never work better after.  The whole process should take no more then an hour.  Thats my advise.  Hope all works out.

i cannot thank you enough for your extensive help :smileyhappy: However, i also consider myself somewhat computer savvy (have built my own desktop, got this laptop just for uni). I have twice done a reset from factory defaults, and i just can't help but feel it is something to do with the drivers. There's just nothing at this point in time that suggests there's some hardware problems. I haven't had a crash today, and from what i read, the WMI crashes other people had were very similar to my own. I ran a tool to fix that up and i haven't had that error nor a crash since, but i guess the same thing happened yesterday and it still crashed regardless! again, thank you for your amazing support :smileyhappy:

alright, yet another update. Crashed again, and again after about 2 mins from starting it up again. It might be a result of high CPU temps, as before the crash realtemp was reporting ~80 degrees for only 50% load, and that would explain why it crashed again shortly after (perhaps it hadn't cooled off). What could the solution be for overheating? Asides from blowing into the vent/getting a cooler pad?

It must just be a result of leaving the ATI graphics card on i assume. The two together mustn't make for a very good system in terms of lower temps, and the fact that it freezes only when the ati graphics are chosen would seem to support this. Great to know that if i wanted to game extensively on this laptop, i would only get a couple of hours before it froze due to heat :\

ahhh this is doing my head in. Laptop just crashed again, cpu temp was around 43 degrees this time. I have ABSOLUTELY no idea what is causing this. Unless these video cards aren't designed to be left on for a certain amount of time. To add to that, the video card wasn't overheating either, being around 44 degrees. I have tried every driver there is, and nothing can solve my problem :smileysad:

Hi, I recently wanted to update my Catalyst version to 12.2 as suggested in the forum. I've downloaded the Catalyst Software Suite 12.2. After downloading the file. I chose the custom install to find out that the Catalyst version TO BE installed was 11.9 and not 12.2. Is there a link to the latest version (12.2)?

I was expecting something like  this version to be installed: 2012.0214.2218.39913 (or something later than this version )

JohnDerrick:  In response to the drivers, I posted a link earlier in the thread to 12.2 preview.  Use that one, not the fully authored 12.2, something relating to pipeline distribution conflicts with the 7690m XT.  You dont always need the newest drivers, usually the newer drivers are just adding newer card support and neglecting on older models.  My version that I have installed on my Dv7t Quad with 7690m XT is 2012.0120.2218.39907.

 

Aplant92:  In regards to heat, when a computer  overheats it will just shut down unexpectantly, like you pulled the battery out when on battery power, crashing does not result of heat.  For my computer with Intel Core i7 I beleive the heat max is around 97C.  I always have the program core temp 1.0 (its free) running in background so I try to keep my laptop under 82C with a cooler pad (which you should always use) and with multiple hours of gaming I usually never exceed 80C.  When you do start to hit the 90s then you need to take computer apart (use youtube) and apply fresh thermal paste and clean out the fan. 

 

with the drivers, back to old advise.  Go to bios, set up boot order to cd-rom, load from windows 7 disk, reinstall entire operating system with reformating hard drive.  That is the only way to fix your issue it sounds.  Installing many different drivers is very counter productive, cause they always conflict.  Question: I am currious if you turn your computer on from a fresh start and just leave it on (turn off screen saver and sleep mode), leave it for hours but watch it in the distance, will it crash?  Also when you say it crashes, does it lock up and not respond or does it shut down?  If it crashes meaning that it locks up, then something is triggering the lock up, or its faulty memory.  If it shuts down then its hardware.

Ah I have done that before (without the disk, just resetting to factory defaults) and I always end up with the freezing regardless :smileysad: I think the laptop only ever freezes while I'm using it, but it's froze from light tasks as well. And it just freezes on the screen, but doesn't shut down. I have to do that myself! D: I've resorted to getting it picked up and taken to a service center, but I'm skeptical as to whether they'll do anything other than reinstall the HP drivers which are useless for gaming
