AMD Radeon 6770 (1 GB and 2GB versions) aren't fullscreen scaling when in-game.

[ Edited ]

Hello,

First of all, I would like to say that the two laptops that we have (dv7t-6000CTO Quad Edition and dv7t-6100CTO Quad Edition) are great laptops!

Although those two are pretty powerful laptops, not having a "Display Scaling" option in the Intel HD Graphics Panel and the AMD Catalyst Control Center is pretty annoying, because a lot of times I want to play a game on lower resolution (something that I'm used to), and it doesn't scale to fullscreen!

For example it would look something like this on 4:3 resolution such as 800x600:

(The above picture is an example of a game that doesn't scale).

And what makes it even worse is that, it doesn't give me choices for resolutions that I am familiar with... When I set the option to wide-screen it would only give me the highest resolution the laptop is capable of (in this case on my brother's laptop it is 1600x900):

(Above picture is also an example of a game that doesn't scale, it does that with all of my other games too, like Red Alert 3.. etc.)

I tried playing around with it (installing different AMD drivers from other websites.. Some of the drivers actually fixes the issue, only gives me more options for widescreen resolutions, but still doesn't scale...  But once I restart the laptop it goes back to showing me one widescreen resolution like what I mentioned above.

I have the latest BIOS version on both of the laptops and the latest HP's AMD drivers installed on both of the laptops and it's still the same.

What's interesting is that if I hook up the laptop onto a screen via HDMI, the game would suddenly show more widescreen resolutions (720p.. etc).

I am writing this to request a driver/software update that includes display scaling and more resolution options please! It's definitely a software issue (since I did resolve the issue temporarily as I mentioned above).

Thanks in advance,

Fadi

P.S.: Here are the specs of both of the laptops:

HP dv7t-6100CTO Quad-Edition (My laptop):

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Full HD anti-glare screen (1920x1080)

2GB GDDR5 Radeon HD 6770M Graphics

Intel Quad Core i7-2630QM

8GB DDR3 RAM

BIOS Version: F.1B

Current switchable graphics setting in BIOS: Fixed Mode.

HP dv7t-6000CTO Quad-Edition (Brother's laptop):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regular screen with 1600x900 resolution

1GB GDDR5 Radeon HD 6770M Graphics

Intel Quad Core i7-2630QM

6GB DDR3 RAM

BIOS Version: F.1B

Current switchable graphics setting in BIOS: Fixed Mode.

======================================================

EDITI forgot to mention that this happens in both Dynamic and Fixed mode (just putting it out there).. :smileyvery-happy:

this is no software issue, this is supposed to be so.

1. you should run cs in directx
2. you can enforce a certain resolution by typing its width as a start parameter (steam > library > right-click on cs > set launch options) type "-w####" without the ""

now what resolution you choose is your choice, however, if you try to force scaling a 4:3 resolution to fullscreen and to fit the whole screen, youll get some very undesirable results (streched picture), since the display has to fill the "black" pixels with the same pixels already displayed, so same pixels will be multiplied, ie. the proportions will be wrong..

so definitely take a 16:9 resolution!

and you really dont need 800x600 or 1024x768 on cs 1.6 and your notebook... your gpu could play cs:s maxed @ 1080p easily, if you had a 1080p display.. also playing on your native resolution (1080p & 900p) is the only way to get a non-blurred picture, and you see more than on smaller resolutions.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply to my post! I would like to let you know that I've already done what you've said with no luck what-so-ever (I guess I should've included that in my original post).

Let me elaborate on what exactly happens on both of the laptops (1080p and the 900p ones)..

If I run CS with lets say the resolution in the launch options set to 1280x720, it would then set the resolution automatically to 1280x1024 (4:3)...

I've tried using multiple types of launch options (specifically for CS, since now we're only talking about CS).. For example I've tried using the "-w####".. The "-height ### -width ###".. The "-full".. None of them worked!

And I've tried multiple resolutions whether it's 4:3 or 16:9 (I don't like to run CS in full HD mode on my laptop, I like it at 1280x720 if I want to play it as widescreen).

Also, I actually like having the game streched onto the whole screen (for example: on my desktop I have set it to 800x600 also and it's streched because of my full HD display), so why not have the option to do so?

But anyways on the laptop it doesn't "fill the screen" or "stretch the screen" "or scaling to full-screen"... It just does what I've shown in the OP...

And finally, this doesn't just happen only in CS, I just used CS as an example.. Also, just like in CS, the laptop doesn't show me full range of resolutions (widescreen resolutions) in some games (like CS), it just gives me the highest widescreen resolution possible (whether it's 1080p or 900p, depending on who's laptop I'm on).  For example the same thing happens in Red Alert 3.. And as mentioned (a lot by now) there's no way I can play games like that in 4:3 resolution as it doesn't go full screen.

It definitely has something to do with the drivers, because in fact, yesterday I've upgraded the drivers to the newest (12.4) AMD Mobility drivers from AMD.com:

And that gave me full set of resolutions to choose from in CS and other games (like 1280x720)..

Unfortunately, I had to revert back to HP's drivers as I was getting extremely low fps on all games other than CS (ironically).

Re: AMD Radeon 6770 (1 GB and 2GB versions) aren't fullscreen scaling when in-game.

i would suggest first installing the most recent HP driver for your gpu, and then (without uninstalling the HP driver!) installing ccc 12.4 over it. this is the way to get the best of both.

dont know why you would suffer from low fps with 12.4... but i think the above procedure should fix it, as i assume its because the IGP is being forced to render, not the 6770m. and by installing 12.4 over the HP driver you keep the switchable graphics feature - just make sure its enabled everywhere (including bios)!

Hey! Thanks for replying back! I really appreciate your time trying to find ways to help me out!

But as I previously mentioned I have done what you just said..

It solves the problem temporarily (when I restart the computer all those widescreen resolutions goes away; they aren't offered as an option anymore).. Plus I get low fps issues (for example I was getting around 15-20 fps in L4D2 (which I get a lot higher than that usually)..

quite annoying i can image, unfortunately theres nothing i could think of more...

if it would force some settings, i would say its the steam cloud, but this doesnt apply.

application profiles neither, since they get deleted once you remove ccc completely.

definitely a driver-related issue, but i really cannot think of any more approaches for you to try :/

especially the low fps & missing display options after restart are very confusing, as your gpu is definitely capable to play the games maxed on 1080p with far more fps.

regarding th elow fps - try disabling the switchable graphics feature & also disabling the IGP inside device manager so the 6770m is the only available gpu. then start gpu-z under the sensors tab, and run a few games. after (if at all) having experienced the low fps for a minute or so, quit the game and look at the gpu/memory clocks & temperatures (& fan activity). if the gpu gets throttled and/or overheats, this may be the reason for low fps. however, this has nothing to do with the resolution issues.. theyre really a mystery.

also make sure you have the most recent bios version installed for both notebooks. they may have even updated vbios versions for the 6770m included.

maybe its an EDID issue..
