Black laptop screen - HDMI output works fine (642 Views)

My HP Pavilion Dv6 1340eo has a problem that just popped out of nowhere, no warnings or strange behavior before. The internal LCD screen is just completely black although the computer itself works fine. The lcd does not display anything, not even BIOS info. And I checked to see if it was just really really dim, and maybe backlight dead, but no. It is completely black. I have been using the computer with the HDMI output to my tv since the LCD went bust. The tv-output works just fine, I have a perfect image via HDMI. Now I left the computer at a repair service shop and they took a look saying that it might be actually both the LCD and the graphics chipset that are broken. Is it possible to have a video output through HDMI but no image on the LCD, if the graphic chip is broken? Wouldn't both screens have display problems - or are the chips separate for internal screen and HDMI output? Can a broken graphics chipset damage a healthy LCD? The repair guys are saying they don't want to try a new screen with the computer until the fixed the (allegedly broken) graphics chip. I am in Italy at the moment and can't hassle with sending the computer away to the official HP repair center in Europe. Though I'm worried that these guys just try to ge me to pay for a bigger repair than they actually do. Thanks for any help!
