Blu Ray discs stopped reading =(

Hello everyone,

I have recently started having issues with my blu ray drive on my Pavilion DV-7 3065dx Laptop. It won't recognize the disc at all which is strange due to the fact that it worked after time of purchase. The only thing I have done was uninstall the HP Mediasmart software then re-install, also I have tried to figure out all the "driver update" stuff but from what I can see they're all up to date but I am no computer expert. 

If anyone could help that would be great! Just picked up LOTR: Extended on blu ray and my roommate got a new LED tv. Now all we need is for my laptop to work again!

Hi Freddy,

If you're using HP MediaSmart DVD to play the Blu ray disc, try the following.

HP now provides a version of Cyberlinks PowerDVD 10 which seems to be a better solution.  Download the latest installer for this on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.

When the download has completed, open windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features, right click the entry for HP MediaSmart DVD and select Uninstall - when this process has completed, restart the notebook.

When windows  has reloaded, open your Downloads folder and double-click the installer for PowerDVD 10 to start the installation.  When this has completed, see if your Blu ray disc now plays OK.

Below is the link for the latest Media smart software. Try reinstalling once and check if you can make those blue ray discs work.

Just did what you told me to and unfortunately it did not work.

If it helps solve the problem my laptop makes 4 humming sounds when the disc is inserted. When playing DVD's or CD's it never makes those noises. Also when I am in Libraries the BD ROM Drive (E appears to be blank when the blu ray is in. When a normal DVD is in it is displayed as BD ROM Drive (ECON_AIR for example.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling of the drivers for Optical drive and check if it fixes the issue. Unfortunately there are no firmware updates available for this particular drive from HP.

Hi Freddy,

As your drive supports both CD/DVDs and BD, open the drive tray and you will see Two lenses mounted on a movable arm just off-centre - try cleaning them with a soft material such as cotton or a cotton bud and see if this makes any difference.

Just used a q-tip to clean the lenses inserted the disc and..................... BD ROM (EFellowship of the Ring popped up!
