Clarity of screen display - laptop Compaq 6710b-GY310PS

I have just purchased a Compaq 6710B-GY310PS laptop and I find the screen display hazy and the colours muted.

The text on the desktop icons is shadowed. 

 

Any help would be appreciated.

Take a read of this. Your description sounds like cleartype is not enabled if your OS is XP. It always helps to give a bit of detail about your laptop configuration. More info is way batter than hardly any. :smileywink:
