Compac Presario V6000- video and restart issues

Ok, Hi...So the Laptop is a Compac Presario V6000 service tag V6120US running XP media edition 2005 edition with service packs installed.

When I push the on button the blue lights come on displaying the on/off button, the volume, etc.  Absolutely no video display on the monitor.  When we hooked it up to an external monitor.....still no video display.

Besides the video problems, when I hit the start button I can hear the computer trying to start up, I can hear the fan and the disc drive. The computer goes on for about for about 5 seconds trying to start then the blue lights on the keyboard stay on for another 15 seconds or so, then the blue lights go out for about 2 or 3 seconds and then it goes through the whole trying to start thing again.  Could probably go into bios and check it out, or for that matter flash it, but, alas, I have absolutely no video. The laptop would probably go into restart indefinitely if I let it, but hey... I felt that 6-12 tries on the restart each time was punishment enough.

Removed the laptop battery for awhile, reinserted it and tried again....same thing.

Replaced the hard drive, no help there either.

Replaced the RAM, same persistent problem.

Have no system restore discs....just a piece of paper that looks like a disc that says it will preform system restore without discs.  Having video would help.

I did search the forum and found no one with the same problem.  This happened out of the blue.  The laptop never shut down unexpectedly.  No warnings... I just shut it off one night and the next day when I tried to turn it on... all of this happened. Happened a few months ago and have been cruzin' tech sites ever since, searching for the answer.  Replacing parts, I thought might help.  So I gave up searching and decided to ask this forum, it seems the most logical, being the compac/hp forum and all..

My computer skills are limited, I can flash a bios, I have f-disked a win 95 set up, loaded dos manually with floppies.  Have installed hardware, but basically I don't know as much as I would like to and quite frankly I'm beyond stumped.

Thank you to all of you who respond trying to help...if nothing else I will notify when the services for the laptop will be held for anyone wanting to attend or contribute their own to the pile...LOL

Seriously, thank you for your time.

Hey there, I have just had the EXACT same problem.  I am furiously going through all the proper steps to try to diagnose.  There is a BLINK function on the LEDs that will tell you the problem.  I think unfortunately it may be a bad CPU.  These units had a recal two years ago, which of course HP did not notify me of, and I have had numerous problems with ports and cards going out.  I think unfortunately it may be officially dead now.  Did you ever get yours working?

Thanks.

I am also having the exact same problem and am less than happy. 16 months is not a good lifespan for a laptop. Has anyone found a resolution or a way to get HP/Compaq to fix it?

Same here. Same laptop make and model: Presario V6000 service tag V6120US. Doing exactly the same thing: no video, infinite reboot without starting up.

Does anybody found a solution?

I bought a new hard drive, will install it and see if I can get the POS to work.  But I am pretty sure it is the motherboard.  The units had a recall for defective motherboard two years ago.  I sent it in for repair under the extended warranty, but HP refused to honor it claiming there was "residue on the unit" and that invalidated the warranty.  I told them that is BS, since the motherboard was defective when I bought it new so however it was used (which was normal wear and tear on a laptop anyway) was irrelevant.  <text deleted> Probably a parts laptop now, rip out the RAM and the drives and throw in the gutter.

Re: Compac Presario V6000- video and restart issues

Well, sorry to say, but I don't think the new HDD will do any good. Basicly the laptop should start even without HDD at all - it would tell you that it cannot find "boot drive" and promt you to provide one. But since this is not the case here, looks like motherboard are gone, that's why all this infinite rebootings and no display feed whatsoever. Anyway, good luck and let us know, if the HDD solved the issue. Take care.

No, the POS is still not working.

Guess which brand I WON'T buy next time.

Such is life.  Hopefully we can save someone the hassle of buying Compac by posting all of this.

at Least they will NOT have the same problem if they find this post, cuz they WON'T  buy a Compac Presario...

have fun

Re: Compac Presario V6000- video and restart issues

There's also a good video on youtube on how to "reflow" the motherboard. Just use "reflow" and
IBM as your key words. The video is 8:14 long. This is assuming you can literally take your entire laptop apart.

It's not just Compaq, the whole DV and TX line is affected, too.
