DV 5000 won't play DVDs

I've had this problem for years actually. When I put a DVD in, no matter what program I use (windows media, media center, hp quickplay), the movie hiccups. Actually, I don't remember if I've ever been able to play a DVD smoothly on it. I have been resigned to the fact that it doesn't work, but maybe there's a fix to it. Please help. I'm not sure if this is related, but when I import a CD to my iTunes, I can't listen to it while it reads the data. If this is a hardware problem, well, forget it. I'm not investing any money into this.

Re: DV 5000 won't play DVDs

you do not say whether Vista or XP but I suspect XP. The first thing I would do is check if DMA (Direct Media Access or Direct memory Access) is activated for the dvd drive. In device manager check the properties of the primary ide channel and be sure it is not pio but is dma or ultra dma.

You're right. It's Windows XP. I checked the Primary IDE Channel and it's already set for DMA. Thanks though.

Is there anything else I can try?
