I guess that I'm a new member to this not so exclusive club. I have all ready determined a fix for the problem. It is based on an old saying "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me." Before HP, I owned a Gateway that lasted 10 years before I had any problems with it, guesss what's on my shopping list. Problem solved.

Got the Blue Screen of Death today on my dv9500...Nvidia 8600M GS failure. Upgraded the driver from version 187.66 to 195.62 here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win
and everything seems to be working. BTW: my system did boot up and the screen quickly failed, but I booted up into safe mode on Win 7 and did the install of the new driver in safe mode. Try it if you can. The link above is for a Win 7/Vista 32-bi driver; there are other updates for 64-bit.

Lucky! I have the same exact problem.
So what is Nvidia's Number?
Maybe I could join your luckyness and have mine repaired at no cost.
I truly need my laptop due to My school homework. NST.

I have a DV9000 with same described issue. Power on and all blue lights but blank screen. I did some research before coming here and called HP support to see if there was a resolution. Not to my surprise I was told there is no information on this issue yet it's all over their own support forum. This is outrageous and I will avoid all HP products in the future. I just don't trust a company that conducts business this way.
And to be offered suggestions on buying a replacement almost made me choke on the phone...I paid $1500 for this lemon.

HP customer service and support blows. When my HP dv9000 was under warranty, I asked for a new screen because mine was blemmished. They said send it in and if we decide to help you, we'll also completely reformat your computer. They wouldn't let me bring it to a local shop for the quick switch. I didn't want to start fresh back then, and could not afford to be without my only source of income then anyway.
Sad to say this video chip error still occurs on HP laptops like my Pavilion dv9000. Was getting stripes and funky columns and scrambled colors, now usually getting black screen. Some days I get video, some days not, some days temporarily. Been saving all files on external hard drive since January 1, 2011 and it's April 2 now. In those three months this laptop (it's working today, uh, for now!) has had video for 45% of the time. It has all my main software on it so I'm making do with it on the days that it allows me to but I really do not like the stress of looming crashes hanging over my head on any day that it does decide to work. Considered re-formatting to see if clean installation of all software would fix any conflicts or whatever, but this forum and others point to the video chip.
When no video, with Vista I can blindly keypress (tab, tab, enter) to shut down w/o login and then try again. I can also finger swipe to blindly log in to Windows and wait for all software to load and then shut down with blind keypresses (tab, rt arrow, rt arrow, rt arrow, enter ). Some days after several tries it will provide video. Usually not.
Like most others herein have said, BOYCOTT HP. Do not buy anything from them, they cannot be trusted or relied upon.
IF HP HAD ANY CARES ABOUT WHAT THEIR CUSTOMERS THINK, IN THIS AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND MARKETING, THEY'D PARTICIPATE ON THEIR OWN FORUM AND ALL OTHERS WITH PUBLIC ADVICE AND HELP. That is what companies do nowadays when they care and when they don't want so much bad publicity. They transparently admit and advise. HP thinks they can hide and get away with this. They'll soon join Blockbuster, Toys R Us, Circuit City, et al on the extinct list.
I'm taking this $1200 anchor of a laptop to two other repair shops for advice right now. Last repair shop i visited said there is a class action law suit against HP (and maybe Nvidia) and he doesn't perform the re-seating of the video chip and I'd have to buy a new $350 mother board with built in chip. Someone else I know had their video chip re-seated twice in two weeks. Not worth it. Class action suit might get me, what, like $30 or so when it's settled?!! In the words of the immortal warlock Sheen, Sizzle Losing BYE!!!

I've owned 5 HP laptops, had problems with all of them that were resolved under warranty.
The expensive as )(*#$ SSD on my HDX18 failed 2 weeks out of warranty and they refused to repair it, and now the video has died on it as well 3 months later (after spending $400 on a new SSD).
My DV9000 has been dead over a year and a half, I just found out that this is a super common problem with them and thought that I'd share my hate as well. I have spent almost $10,000 with HP in total on my 5 laptops ( 2 HDX 18's, a DV9000, a TC1100, and a CQ50) and do not ever plan on spending another dime considering all the problems. I can't afford to throw my money away! I just got off the phone with customer support and they said they had never heard of anyone having a video issue with either the HDX or the DV9000. BS!
