[ Edited ]

When I turned on the computer, the screen just showed groups of brite blue vertical lines and would not boot after exhausting all of the recommended resolution. My researched discovered it a know hp issue caused a Video Chip failure.

Re: DV9000 Video Chip Failure; LCD not working & system will not boot

Let me guess.........you have an Nvidia gpu !

If so, you and thousands more are suffering from a "DEFECTIVE" graphics chip, which Nvidia has admitted to and paid HP $ MILLIONS $  of dollars to help resolve this issue. Problem is HP is only covering notebooks with an AMD processor.

OK..........lets see here, the KNOWN problem is the video chip, which both AMD and INTEL cpu's use, but HP is only going to cover AMD ?

Anyways, check out the "HP Business Forums" at the link below and you'll see hundreds of other dissatisfied customers having the same issues you are experiecing..........and BTW, good luck, your going to need it ! I've contacted HP 4 times and gotten the same reply.........."Your notebook is not covered but, we've got some great deals on new ones" !

Re: DV9000 Video Chip Failure; LCD not working & system will not boot

Same problem with an HP dv9000t. Paid $1600 for a computer that lasted ~14 months. What a waste. Will never buy HP again. Worst ROI of any electronics I've owned. Have been talking to multiple HP service reps since June/July 2008....they just don't stand by the productand want $400 to replace the motherboard (probably with another stockpiled poorly manufactured motherboard with a defective nVidia GPU)

Re: DV9000 Video Chip Failure; LCD not working & system will not boot

I actually have a video I will hope to be posting soon one what mine is doing

I have a DV9260nr and I think I have the NVIDIA video card too. I've had mine since June of 07 and this just started happening last night. This is ticking me off too because I am limited on money due to me possibly being layed off from work. I love the computer, but now this happens. When I boot it up it just gives me a blue screen. It WAS flickering all kinds of colors, but now its not. I'm going to take it buy best buy after work today and have them plug it up...not gonna spend any money there though. Is this the same problem??

Re: DV9000 Video Chip Failure; LCD not working & system will not boot

See this post...    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.id=Display&thread.id=939

I have noticed that if you put any stress on the video card (ex. Google Earth) the system will shut down and do a system memory dump.  This wipes out your video drivers and so on.  When you reboot, the screen if heavily pixelated as you could imagine since the Nividia chip is not being used.  After further investigation this chipset on this motherboard has a large record of problems between 13 to 18 months of use.  Though it isn't happening to all customers, it is still happening to a large group of people around the world.

After spending 1,500 dollars on this laptop for it to have a "common" malfunction in hardware this early should be recalled.  The reason I say common cause this thread alone defines "common" for me.

I have the dv9548us

 Windows Vista 32bit

Nividia GForce 8600M GS <-- Its clear that those who has this chipset or G84 is likely to have a problem.

I am 200+ days over my HP warranty

The extended Warranty was with Circuit City/FireDog  <--- Now out of business

I have called the 866-671-7362

They have indicated to me that there are no known fixes aware of yet.  After putting me on hold (20min) to "speak with a supervisor".  They have referred me to this site... Which is no longer up...  http://www.hpnotebooksettlement.com/     After both him and I could not see the site he then put me back on hold (10min).  When back he referred me to 1-800-657-1876 that does not work.  He also referred me to...

Powerplug & Graphics card Litigation Settlement Administrator

P.O. Box 1898

Faribault, Mn.  55021-7153

I have know idea if this department is still open.

I have had my issue escelated to be referred to a Case Worker.  I was strongly advised to hear them out before I choose to purchase a Dell that I am currently investigating.

HP must take responsibility for this hardware malfunction.  It is clear the anything with the G8m chipset series is vulnerable for complete malfunction.

Due to what is in this forum alone plus the news reports on these chips could be grounds for a class action suit.  Because when HP is made aware of it; HP is choosing to ignore it.

So, I am curious as to what comes of this after my communication with the Case Worker.  Keep voicing your problem and keep calling 866-671-7362 and lets get them to come up with a solution.  I sure would hate to buy a motherboard for $350 just so the same chipset will go out in a year.

Re: DV9000 Video Chip Failure; LCD not working & system will not boot

as u can see, your video card has failed,if you continue to stress the card, sooner than later it will stop working,i suggest you change the power profile to power save mode, the speed of the gpu+video memory will work at half speed maximum, yup performance will decrease but at least you will have a working machine,i did this to mine and it is keeping going,at performance mode mine crash at booting with the lovely blue screen.

Re: DV9000 Video Chip Failure; LCD not working & system will not boot

I actually have tried that setting.  We have run about 10 tests on the machine to pinpoint its vulnerabilities and if it was in affiliation to any other hardware.  We have discovered that it (another system tech and I) was directly and solely due to the 8600M GS chipset malfunctioning.  With the settings low for example, resolution and power save mode the system runs for a bit longer until something simple as viewing photos in a library causes a system crash.

Re: DV9000 Video Chip Failure; LCD not working & system will not boot

After fighting tooth and nail to get HP to fix the hinge problem on my $2400 top of the line dv9000 purchased 18 months ago, the video card and LCD tanked 3 days after getting it back. Of course, it is not covered by the extended warranty. The processor is Intel. I now have $2400 doorstop.HP wants to replace it with a new, bigger and better model for only $1300. I will never purchase another HP - the customer DIS-service is shameful.
