Display Driver Stops working and Recovers

I have a Pavilion dv7 notebook that has been pausing for a few seconds while displaying the following message.

Display Driver has stopped and has recovered.

Display Driver  AMD Driver has stopped and has recovered.

The problem may occur as often as every 30 minutes or go for hours without doing it.  And twice yesterday it seized and had to be turned off by holding the Power Switch down until it stopped before it could be re-booted.

I started having problems in February.  The computer was sent in for warranty repair and was out of service for over two weeks.  When returned with a restore and all of my information gone (Backed Up before sending in) I reinstalled everything.  Shortly after all my information and programs were restored it went down again.  At  support's advice, I ran advanced diagnostics and it reported a bad hard drive.  They wanted it sent in again.  I complained about time to repair.  A new hardrive  was sent to me and I installed.  Did advanced diagnostics for over 8 hours to insure myself everything ok before reinstalling my data.  Everything checked as Passed and still does, so feel part of the problem is taken care of.

This current error message was showing up before I installed the new hard drive and did a complete restore from new disks sent to me by HP.  Is there a driver compatibility problem, or would I possibly have a vidio card that is defective and not showing up on the HP advanced tests?

I might add this computer has 2 500 GB hard drives, 8 GB of Ram and a Quad processor.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Display Driver Stops working and Recovers

Hi

1) Click start in search type Recovery Manager then click on it select Yes on User access control then select I need immediate help then select Driver & application recovery select the AMD driver and install it then restart the unit.

2) Please go to HP website and update the Bios, Graphic & Chipset driver.

Manjunith

I will try your suggestions.

Thank you very much.  Incidentally I see I am shown as a student.  Not sure how that happened, but I am hardly a student at 74 .  Not a novice and certainly not the sharpest tack in the box either.

Thank you again.

I have tried to do No 1 of your two suggestions so far.  There are no AMD drivers that appear.  When I checked the box that would indicate this it takes me to Device Manager.

I have an ATI Mobility Radcon HD 5650 video card and the driver supplier is ATI Technologies Inc.  I went a little further and checked the Driver File Details.  In the list of files in this driver, I find two that indicate they may have come from AMD.  They are:

amdpcom64.dll

amdpcom32.dll

I failed to mention if it is important... I am using Windows 7 Professional and the computer is a 64 bit computer.

I have not yet done suggestion No. 2, thinking you may have wanted them done in order.

Thanks.

Re: Display Driver Stops working and Recovers

Manjunath,

Forgot to mention,  after my hard drive installation and System Recovery, the computer of course went through quite a few updates.  One of the most recent ones was a video driver update from HP.  It made no difference with the operation, I was having the problem before and after the update.

Prior to the hard drive replacement I was having herky jerky operation of U-Tube videos.  That problem has gone away.  I have run some 10 minute videos with no pausing or anything.

Re: Display Driver Stops working and Recovers

Manjunath,

In some way my Username did not work today.  I was signed in as Have_Wheels yesterday and was having the video problem.

I went in and changed the bios and let then started looking at drivers.  I let the program do a diagnosis of my drivers and it came back with 7 drivers that needed to be updated.  I did so and gave it about 30 hours of testing before coming back on here.  The problem seems to be corrected.  I have not been able to catch the video pausing as it was before and displaying the error message.

Thank you so very much for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: Display Driver Stops working and Recovers

Hi

Sorry for the delay in the response please try doing a system restore to the date where unit was working fine.
